Join me today onboard the Jungle express in First Class from Chiang Mai all the way down to Bangkok. The journey will take around 13 hours covering close to 500 miles - it will give me the chance to show you all the features of this new sleeper train. There are two levels of service offered, Second Class sleepers and First Class sleeper cabins. Only First cabins have access to showers of which I'll try out and let you know my thoughts.

This train has quite a famed dining car... but you'll find out why food today is well, quite non existent. I'll also break down the cost for this adventure - which may surprise you given the cost of similar overnight trains in Europe or indeed Amtrak in the USA.

As always with my trip reports and reviews, do let me know what you think - is this a rail journey you'd like to take?

I like that you do trains as well as planes. Also I like how honest you are. Keep it up.

I did 28hrs on a Burmese train in 3rd class a few years ago. No food (you had to quickly shout while stopping at random stations. A local saved me by buying me dinner, he was on third class so clearly wasn't rich his kindness humbled me as he simply wouldn't except any cash), hard wooden seats, hole in the floor toilets, open air windows and one of the single most fun trip ive ever done

Will, so sorry to hear about this "foodless" trip. 😱🤣. As an old timer, I learned many years ago that it's always a good idea to pack a picnic lunch with some beverages just for that unexpected journey where there is nothing offered to eat or drink. I always bring a little extra just in case my seat mate is without anything to eat. It's a great icebreaker also. Take care and have a great week.
  • I love your channel! If you're up for 96ish hours on a train, try Canada's Via Rail from Toronto to Vancouver. It's quite the experience!

Hi Im from Thailand and I’m very glad you like our train. It’s not luxury compared to other country’s train but It’s such a great experience trying it even from me. I’m waiting on other Thai videos. Great job❤🇹🇭

Back in 1996 I took the sleeper from Bangkok to Surat Thani. After they made up the berths for sleep, I sat on my lower bunk and watched the scenery out the window. At one point we slowly passed by an open field that was nearly covered with fire flies. It was one of the most surreal and magical sights I've ever encountered.

Can’t wait for the Japanese train review, I love watching the Japanese travel YouTubers videos on them! (If on the Sunrise express, don’t forget to get your shower card as soon as you get on the train, I hear they are limited and go pretty quick!)

This is a whole new world to when I did Bangkok to Chang Mai back in 2002!
  • I can't imagine 'Flower of Scotland' being played when the 12:30 to Edinburgh Waverley leaves Glasgow Queen Street. Great video.

Love your channel, but every time you get a shot of you walking away I keep thinking "But does he have to go back to get it... let's hope no one takes it." 😂

My wife and I completed this journey going the other way back in 2012 - We were in second class and that was when you could drink on the train - It was excellent fun and a great night's sleep being rocked by the train all night after a few beers and a few dirty shots of Hong Thong consumed with our fellow travellers :)
  • Thank-you for these video's. I am disabled and living my life vicariously through you.😊

You are my favourite traveller on YouTube. There’s something about what you do with everything.

Finding the best view on a train trip is always satisfying. 11:15 . Thanks.

13 hours without food being served? that's mental

Thanks for this vid! Nice to see what first class looks like on the special express trains 9 & 10. Not really brand new as you said but still looking superb indeed. When I took this train a couple of weeks ago, it was much fuller already and you could order sticky rice with mango which they then had delivered to the train at one of the stations near Chiang Mai and they offered instant noodles and instant coffee (staff had a water kettle set up on one of the seats, the restaurant section was not there/not operating). If food is still not available in the train, you can get food to take away from the restaurant in front of the station before departure. Eat it quick before the air-con freezes your meal! There are power outlets in second class though! In the corner next to each window. Warning: this train is a fridge on wheels with air-con set to freeze mode. Bring a windbreaker or other clothing that will keep you warm. The blankets resemble a large towel - the cold air cuts right through it. Upper berth, slightly cheaper, is colder than lower birth. Another tip: bring a sleep mask. Lights stay on all night, at least in second class. Welcome (back) to Thailand!
  • Remember taking this train back in 2019. Awesome trip, however they refused to turn off the lights in 2nd class, and the airco wasn’t functioning that well. Rough ride but worth it!
