Daniel Ziblatt: How democracies can defend themselves against threats from within

Published 2024-05-23
Daniel Ziblatt spoke at an event organised by the Karl Renner Institute on 22 May 2024 in the Austrian Parliament in Vienna.

He talked about how democracies die, observing that the main threats to democracy today come from within, and presented different strategies for how democracies can defend themselves - without undermining the very foundations and norms on which they are built.

In 2019, he and Steven Levitsky published the international bestseller "How Democracies Die".
Their new book, "Tyranny of the Minority", was published in 2023.

Daniel Ziblatt is Eaton Professor of the Science of Government at Harvard University and, since October 2020, the director of the Department Transformations of Democracy at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center.

The event was organised in cooperation with the SPÖ Parliamentary Group.
