Adam Johnson, Head of Interpretive Media at the Nelson-Atkins, will discuss how museums reconcile potentially conflicting missions of exhibiting a work of art vs. physically protecting the piece for future generations. Johnson will use a recent conservation study of the Museums Chinese masterwork, Guanyin of the Southern Sea, to illustrate the challenge.

The mural painting is one of the three paintings cut and stolen from Guangsheng Temple in Shanxi Province, China in the last century.

Jibberish justifications from thieves: protect and preserve for your own/public good. You thieves stole the object but you can't steal the meaning nor understand the philosophy/culture, what good does it to you just to brag about your price?
  • This should be updated due to the incorrect gender identification of Quanyin in the Chinese tradition. This is not an Indian sculpture, no matter the history. PLEASE use she or they, not HE! I personally have always loved that this work is so gender neutral and my experience with them was the perfect balance of both Sun and Moon energies. The darshan from them is still flowing.
