Guitar Comparison - Huss and Dalton TOM-M Custom and TOM-R Custom

Published 2022-01-08
These two custom Huss and Dalton Traditional OM's have similar construction, bracing and specs, but different tone woods: the TOM-M has an Italian spruce top and sinker mahogany back and sides; the TOM-R has an old Sitka Spruce top with Honduran Rosewood back and sides. Each has its own characteristics, but they share the wonderful warmth and responsiveness that Huss and Daltons are known for.

  • Both guitars seem very balanced with nothing that sticks out at you. I like the rosewood version best. Has bit better bit more sustain at the top end and sounds more open to my ears. Most players would compare these to the Collings, Santa Cruz and of course Martin versions (maybe a few others). However the Huss and Daltons hold their own in my comparisons and to me offer the most balanced tones across the fretboard than many others in this price range.

Woo-eee... Absolutely beautiful playing! I really will be looking at Huss & Dalton guitars more closely now. The warmth of the mahogany was spell-binding, but the sparkle and harmonics of the rosewood make it my favourite. Many thanks for such a great comparison! Best Wishes!
  • Well, this is how you do a guitar comparison. Great job, thank you. I already have a couple of Huss guitars, they are my favourites, they always have this sweet, woody warmth to them that is just so musical. I'm thinking of adding an OM to my collection and the Huss website led me here. To my ear the Italian/sinker is a little louder with a little more bass. It almost sounds like a bigger guitar, but it still has that articulation you expect from an OM and that mahogany midrange thump. Simply wonderful. On the other hand, the old sitka/rosewood has a richness and complexity that brings something subtler but extremely musical to the table. I'm not sure I've heard a guitar quite like it before. It's really very special. I'll be thinking about these two and may get in touch to see if you ship to the UK. Either way, these are two of the finest OMs I've ever heard. Simply stunning.
