Thanks for commenting. Scott Crossfield was a lifelong hero of mine, and one of the key inspirations for the Discovery Channel series this clip hails from. He was incredibly kind and generous to us throughout the project, and the two-hour interview he granted remains a highlight of my life. Michael Lennick / Foolish Earthling Productions

Thank you so much for your comments and that wonderful memory. Interviewing Scott Crossfield was one of the highlights of my career (and life.) We have one other sequence posted that may interest you, pulled from the same episode of our Discovery Channel series 'Rocket Science' (ep. #2 - "The Rocketeers") from which this clip hails. Apparently we're not allowed to list links in comments but it's called "Scott Crossfield breaks Mach 2", and you'll find it on the Youtube sciencehighway channel.

This was actually the SECOND time he was nearly killed in a ground test. He went on to fly the thing fourteen times. They don't make 'em like him any more.
  • I got the HONOR and PRIVILEGE of meeting him back in the mid-70's at the EAA Fly-In in Oshkosh Wisconsin. He was SO COOL!  I got to actually spend some time talking with him AND got to sit IN the X-15 that was there! Somewhere there are pics of me with him AND with me in the X-15! SUCH a Great memory! :D He even told me a joke... "Hey did you hear about the time when John Glenn had a Breakfast and Launch at the same time?" I STILL remember that time in TOTAL Detail to this VERY Day! :D
  • Holy S**t!!!    What a legend! Scott Crossfield. Nerves of steel and a true gentleman. They dont make 'em like that anymore.

Very nice video. My great-great-uncle took Scott Crossfield on his first airplane ride and I'm really enjoying finding any vids on here that pertain to Mr Crossfield. Thank you for your service, Sir.

I had the distinctly rare pleasure of being invited to a dinner with both Scott Crossfield and Robin Olds while at Oshkosh in 1998. I don't recall saying much other than thank you for the wonderful supper.

Scott Crossfield visited our school in 1978. The first astronaut I ever met. Amazing for an 8th grader.

Absolutely incredible, what a man. I could really learn a thing or two from these brave gentlemen of the past...

Crossfield is a handsome guy, there at 3:44. I guess we all are when young. It's interesting reading Yeagers opinion of Scotty in his book, probably somewhat biased. He appears to be a straight forward guy. It was sad & ironic that he was taken out by a plane crash he was piloting. But on the other hand, it was a fitting way to go. We should all live so long.

He was flying a hard IFR flight planned to take him home in Virginia. Yes, it was a C210 (early model) the same green ship he flew many times to WJ Fox Field in Lancaster, CA. He got caught in a developing level IV thunderstorm and could not get away from it soon enough. I met him in CA several times when he would stop in Lancaster for fuel and food.

One thing to note: 1. Plane gone 2. Engine still in one piece in the stand.

i’ve been a pilot for 42 years and in fact became pilot after being inspired by the exploits of Scottie Crossfield. The thinking man’s pilot. RIP Mr. Crossfield.
  • @pchiare
True story, the alloy that makes up the moon rockets is actually copied from the metal that makes up this man's testicles. What an absolute, complete mofuggin badass.
