The Hobbit could be the most underrated speedrun there is. With insane tricks, cool movement, a dedicated community and a rich history. You'll be surprised to see how this small but dedicated community kept breaking and optimizing The Hobbit even 18 years after its release. This is the history of The Hobbit speedruns.

This documentary has been a massive project that I poured my heart and soul into. I'm super grateful to everyone who supported me and everyone who has been a part of the community - be it player or spectator.

So after re-watching this, I just really want to say - Thank you for representing me the way you did. It's easy to mock my stubbornness in sticking with old routes, but you went out of your way to explain my mindset as well as the benefits that it can grant over time. Aside from just that, I love this video. It's an amazing showcase of so many people working together in different ways to push the game as far as we can, and I know this isn't the end of our story.

I was the lead programmer on the PC version of this game. Honestly I wish I could remember why we didn't have PC gamepad support, and the collision code was exactly the same between consoles and PC. Not sure why there are all those clipping issues, probably frame rate differences, but you're welcome. It's great seeing the love still being shown for this game. Great documentary and unbelievable runs.

I read the spoiler that there was a huge twist in this video, but didn’t know what the twist itself was. I spent the whole video thinking world record contestants perhaps planned to murder each other, and even that, didn’t prepare me for what the actual twist was. Beautiful video, beautiful game, and amazing presentation. Congratulations on a master piece.
  • "Unfortunately Aceprune died..." Me: oh no "... in Over Hill and Under Hill by falling down during the stone giants section" Me: Oh. Oh yeah, of course.

Or spoiling anything, but the plotwist in this was legit one of the best ive seen in any media ever. Awesome video

Imagine going back in time and showing this video to JRR Tolkien and having to explain it all to him
  • @WolfbytesIT
That twist got me. Possibly the most well produced speedrun documentary I've ever watched, I actually found myself invested in the stakes the runners had. Amazing work.
  • Can we just appreciate this guy telling us the name of and artist behind every bit of background music he used in this video? Truly a hero of our day

Man, every small community online deserves to be documented with this kind of enthusiasm. Just demonstrates we are surrounded with incredible stories!

This ain’t a flop, bro. What flop? This video was insanely engaging, and I’m not even a speed runner (or much of a gamer, even). Was worth all the effort, dude. What a fricking ride, haha. Was really clear to discern the different timelines - a massive accomplishment granted the sheer number of dates, personalities, and accomplishments. Congrats on successfully making every participant in your doco feel like an anime protagonist, lmao. What an sick narrative, yo~ A+!
  • I’ve tried to find other speed run documentaries as good as this one. Nothing comes close. A masterpiece of YouTube history for me.

I'm not a speedrunner, but i absolutely love watching history of speedrunning videos. i love the drama of new skips / tricks getting discovered and used. and GIRL. when you revealed the identity of iRule... i lost my mind. i was GAGGED. that was so masterful, thank you for the drama, and thank you for your contribution to the speedrunning community and for making this awesome video! much love!
  • @RaccChannel
I'm going to be honest, this is everything I've ever wanted in a speedrunning Doc - it's absolutely so apparent that you've spent countless hours looking through exact changes to the routes and new discoveries. To tie up all of this while making it engaging and carry the gravitas of just how hard you and your contemporaries in the scene worked is an absolute feat. Thank you for this!
  • @treytreytrey
Schneider getting pissed off and slaughtering the record was some of the most gangster shit I’ve seen in speedrunning.
  • @ndescruzur4378
At the beginning: He died 3 times on this cliff but didn't do bad overall so it was a world record Later: He wiggled the camera for a frame which killed the run It is always cool to see how with every new optimization the speedrun becomes more sophisticate and close to perfect. Incredible story and video, probably one of the bests I've seen on youtube
  • @cytyzent
I wasn't expecting such a heartfelt, sincere outro like that. Honestly got me really emotional. I'm so glad to have watched this, it was so enjoyable watching all of this put together. You did a fantastic job here, and all the work you put in to make the game you love stand out.
