Sunny Side of Life is a 1985 documentary film about the musical Carter Family focusing on A.P and Sara's children, Janette, Joe and Gladys who still live in the mountains and are trying to keep the legacy of their parents alive, at the Carter Fold near Maces Spring, Virginia. It includes interviews with the clan including a small snippet with June Carter Cash, also rare footage of Sara Carter performing! from 1975, The title is based upon the early Carter Family hit recording, "Keep On the Sunny Side" (1928). The thumbnail photo for this video is Sara, Joe, Janette, AP and Gladys in the 1950s, it rare for the family to be together like this as Sara moved the other side or America! in the 1940s untill her death in 1979.

I have met the Cash family, Johnny and Roseanne Cash and Carleen Carter as I was working on the live music scene in London, the nicest, most down to earth artists I have ever met, an absolute pleasure to deal with..

There's no doubt about it, the Carter family music, along with their siblings, cousins, offspring etc, is a lasting legacy which will go on forever as long as we keep playing it. An honest family of mountain folk, and music was their life.

Oh lord how i wish you would show me the days of old. The times when happiness was above all.
  • The group of men at the start are some of the finest musicians you'll ever see folks. The Carter Family came from folks like this, and preserved the music forever.
  • Wishing I had been there!! I would have a had so much FUN..no one's fighting or acting up...it's as if the music put everyone in a trance ....I can see they really loved it!! I do to!

My dad taught himself to play guitar as a boy in the 1930s. He could sing and yodel, too, and I grew up listening to most of the songs in this video. I've always loved the original Carter family. Thanks for making this available to all of us. I never even knew it existed.

It is clear AP and Sara didn’t exactly pass down a fortune to their kids. They probably didn’t even make much to begin with after the publishers took most of it.
  • Wonderful documentary, I really enjoyed it, every time I hear that fiddle I wanna jump up and dance. Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪

I’ve always loved watching this documentary about the Carter Family. It would always come on PBS, around the first week of August, every year, remembering the Carter Family. Because that first week of August is when the original Carter Family first made their famous recordings in 1927.
