Do you have an old stump in your yard?

Published 2016-08-23
Ed Hume show how to use an auger bit or drill to create holes about 1 inch in diameter, about 12 inches deep. Drill holes about 3-4 inches apart and fill the holes with potassium nitrate (stump remover). Use a funnel to add hot water to the holes.

For large stumps, 24+" rent a backhoe ...pros: 100% gone in just a few hours, you can follow the roots and get them too. ...cons: cost, rips up yard, labor intensive to restore yard rent a stump grinder ...pros: quick, it will be gone to beneath ground level in minutes ...cons: cost, stump remains 2-3" below ground level and all the roots will still be there burn it: gas, lighter fluid, bags of charcoal, etc - I've tried them all. ... pros: fun, great camp fire smell ... cons: it's slow - only the top layer of wood will burn no matter how many 1" holes you drill and fill with accelerant (gas, etc). One layer will burn at a time. ............. you have to monitor the fire and prevent it from spreading ............. illegal in many urban/suburban areas, big $$$ fines possible Potassium Nitrate: ... pros: least expensive, least amount of time/labor ... cons: very slow process but with enough drilling and KNO3, the stump will eventually turn to dust. ............ the KNO3 granules do not easily dissolve when covered with boiling water. It's more effective to dissolve it directly in the boiling water first, 1/2 cup KNO3 per quart, and then pour the mixture into the holes

I bought a thing called a shovel and it worked a charm, got the stump out washed it down. Turned upside down and attached orchids, ferns and flowers it is now a feature in my garden.

Grind the potassium nitrate to a fine powder, add 15 % by weight hard wood charcoal, ground to an equally fine powder, then add 10% by weight sulfur powder. Mix the 3 ingredients thoroughly, pour into hole in stump, place a adequate length of cannon fuse into hole, light fuse and run!

I tried with wood bits and it doesn't work well. I used a gas Husqvarna trimmer with a carbide circular saw blade to grind down a large tree stump and a small tree stump. My Husqvarna trimmer with a carbide saw blade worked so great to grind down 4 inches tree stump to ground level in few hours (depending on the hardenless of the tree stump, mine was dried up and hardened like rock). Try it and you would be much happier.

I always use the same 3 simple tools when removing tree stumps; my neighbors: "Moe, Larry, and Curly."

Pours holes with potassium nitrate, add diesel, add an m80 with long fuse lol
  • I dig the soil round the stump..drill 4 hole through the stump.. drill top to bottom at the stump centre... Break cole bricket into pieces ..put inthe top hole .. find dry branchs fire it.. burn the stump
  • Expose the stump, so you can cut it 2 inches below the service. Wash the dirt away so don't damage the chain. If you use a chain saw. Make four plunge cuts at oh 45° a pyramid lift the pyramid out then use fertilizer, potassium use rainwater [not city water] to dissolve it add molasses to feed the microbes add the same plants and dirt, you would to compost pile. Keep it damp. once a month turn it.
  • Dissolve the product in hot water completely and pour it into your holes..maybe make a 1/2 gallon at a time??
  • Potassium Nitrate (Saltpeter) is an oxidiser - that's why it rots wood. But if you leave it in a metal galvanised watering can it will oxidise and rust that!

If you regularly mow over the area, the "suckers" will repeatedly get cut down every time and eventually stop.

What about using Spectracide Stump Remover instead of the potassium nitrate?
  • @TheFIoridaMan
I thought this was how to make a bomb out of a stump and potassium nitrate at first
  • @harrys.3165
Why don't you mix the pottasium nitrate in hot water before you put it in the holes.
  • @garyholt4445
You never got rid of the stump, you just treated it.
  • @bawrytr
If you keep your grass mowed, you don't have a problem with suckers.
  • @catfish24
You would think if you put fertilizer on a stump you would get a bigger stump.

It's been 2 years. Can you please post an update showing how fast this approach works? Because in my experience, it doesn't do anything at all. An easier way to dissolve the potassium nitrate is in a container and then pour the water into the holes. Repeat that until you're tired of having fun and then either dig the stump out or burn it out. On the plus side, the stump might burn better if you have presoaked it repeatedly with potassium nitrate.
