Tucked away in the foothills of the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains is the little Alpine village of Helen. Here we ate at Hofers Bakery & Cafe, Mullers Famous Fried Cheese Cafe, and the Hofbrauhaus Restaurant & Bar. Home to less than a thousand folks, this town is one of the top tourist attractions in the Southeast. The Chattahoochee river winds through the middle of town similar to the Rhine River of Germany and blends with the local architecture that harkens to a Bavarian village. Shops and restaurants come to life during more than 35 events held annually - but no festival is as big as Helen’s Oktoberfest, the longest running one of its kind in the US.

Hofer’s Bakery & Café
The Hofer's migrated to Atlanta from Germany in the 1950s and eventually created one of the most recognized and award winning retail bakeries in the country. By the early 1990s they opened this location in Alpine Helen. The building combined old world quality and modern European equipment and was a perfect match for the Bavarian-style village.

Muller’s Famous Fried Cheese Café
Muller’s Famous Café serves up authentic German and Czech cuisine, led by Executive Chef Zdenek Muller who holds a degree in Culinary Arts from Prague in the Czech Republic. The freshest ingredients and traditional recipes await you and will ensure a cultural and tasty experience.

Hofbräuhaus Restaurant & Bar
The Hofbräuhaus is a fun, lively Bavarian-style restaurant serving up authentic German Gasthav-style dishes to go with imported beer. The weekends typically bring in live music on the patio, but there is also indoor seating that overlooks the Chattahoochee River of the North Georgia Mountains. Guten appetit!

Lucille’s Mountain Top Inn & Spa
Lucille’s is a luxury bed and breakfast located on a mountain overlooking panoramic ridge lines of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Just east of Helen, they host 13 well appointed rooms crowned by the Crow’s Nest, a windowed perch to enjoy 360 degree views of the Sautee Valley. But make no mistake, it is the outdoor gazebos, decks, and walkways that beckon you to breathe in the clean air and take in the lavish scenery.

Oktoberfest at the Festhalle
Helen is host to the country’s longest running Oktoberfest, one that typically runs weekends in September and daily from October to early November. Weekends are popular with tour and college groups, while weekdays are more family-friendly. Although local restaurants have food and drink specials with live music, the main event is in the town’s Festhalle (fest ha-luh) where rotating musical acts play traditional German tunes mixed with modern favorites. And, yes, there is plenty of beer and brats there, too. Zicke zacke, zicke zacke, hoi hoi hoi!

We venture to the area regularly (Unicoi State Park). Helen has become an interesting place. Some very strange visitors (not necessarily of the family variety), but a cool place for first time visitors. A tourist trap for sure, but there are hidden gems there.
  • My family ate at the Hofbrauhaus and were very disappointed. Everyone's food was terrible.

Helen is way too crowded and overpriced for any meal! Its in the middle of nowhere, yet you have to pay for parking and deal with huge crowds. Just go to any nearby town and get better food at better prices with no wait and no crowds. Its basically 100s of shops selling overpriced candy and tourist stuff.
