How to quickly age the near-white maple necks on Squier and other inexpensive guitars to make them look old! No need to remove the old finish! (links below):

I mentioned "DK guitars" in the video. I meant "Big D" guitars. Sorry about that!

Minwax Spar Urethane Satin Finish: amzn.to/3pES33n
Angelus Leather Dye (Brandy Color): amzn.to/2MfFqNR
Red Devil Steel Wool Pads: amzn.to/2KSQXm2
Skil Corded Jig Saw: amzn.to/3o2z96e
Isopropyl Alcohol 99%: amzn.to/2X5eO4t
Indio Retro Classic Tele-Type Electric Guitar: amzn.to/3hynKIW
Glarry GTL Tele-Type Electric Guitar: amzn.to/3b1hqZ6
Squier Bullet Telecaster: amzn.to/3aauDP6
Squier Telecaster Affinity Series: amzn.to/3mj4dNB

Here's something I forgot to mention in the video: If you don't want to remove your headstock decal, I believe you can still use this method. You are only scuffing up the poly finish, not removing it. You should be able to scuff up the finish over the whole neck with steel wool, including over the decal. The Angelus dye would then be applied over the entire neck, including the decal, I can't see why you would have different results this way. But, be sure to spray at least two coats of poly over the entire neck after dyeing it.

  • Thanks, I was looking for a way to age my fender neck without destroying the headstock logo. This worked perfectly.
  • I literally learned 5 things from this vid..thanks man..rock on🤘

I find that a few coats of spar urethane by itself gives a maple neck a nice, natural looking amber tint. Even regular, oil-based Minwax polyurethane imparts a bit of yellowing to the wood, but not as much as spar.

Thanks for posting this, i just aged a squire neck using your method, the Angelas Brandy color mixed 50/50 with alcohol is on point for that vintage yellow
  • @ibberman
Thank you for the great video, I'll have to get some of that Brandy colored leather dye. I like what you did with the Indio headstock, I like rounding off that beak as well. I been contemplating what to do with the two Glarry headstocks I have, you did a great job on yours. 👍👍👍👍👍

Exposure to sunlight sorts pale new Squier necks and also stark white pickguards.
  • I like the darker shade of the Tele neck you decided against using. What color dye did you use?

The best way is to use UV light, this will actually age the wood the same way they naturally age, I used a UV fly zapper thing, give it 3-4 days under the light, longer if needed and then just use mineral oil to get rid of the dryness, later clean with lemon oil on the frets, it will look and actually be like a real vintage guitar (knocks and scratches are optional)
  • @blevinsgoat
The brandy color on there website looks more of a dark reddish color. Is that the same one you used?
  • I too have the Indio Retro Classic sunburst tele..and I too do not like the headstock hook,so I will be cutting it to my desired look,as you did. I also don't like the white poplar neck on my indio.so.i might try a few parts of your method to age mine. Make the neck look like it belongs to the sunburst more.nice video.
  • If you wanted to darken rosewood a little, could you just skip the tape and do the whole thing in one swoop?
  • @jltrem
The expensive spray guitar lacquer is from Athens, Ohio. Guess who?
  • @rhykko77
What about the the maple fingerboard on the Indio ?
  • @sunriseshell
Would this work OVER decals if you went light with the steel wool? I want to tint my neck but don't want to remove the logos or serial.
  • @2dazetake
How did you do the fretboard, did you have to sand it down too before staining?
  • do you have any suggestions on how to do this with a neck that has tung oil finish ?
