8 IMPORTANT Composition Tips for Better Photos (Re-upload)

So, you’re looking to improve your photography and you’re (rightfully) told that composition is the key to a great photo. You proceed to read up on compositional rules and you realise there’s a lot to learn. The rule of thirds, the golden spiral, the phi grid, the Fibonacci sequence, leading lines, arabesques and dynamic symmetry. It all looks very complex and confusing.

You examine bodies of work taken by a variety of well-respected photographers, but rarely find any examples that fit with these rules you’ve read about. In fact, most of these images almost read like a list of case studies showing what not to do.

You’re confused and overwhelmed and really don’t know where to start.

The problem is that composition is a massive subject and learning all the grid systems and ratios is only one tool in your visual toolbox. So let me give you 8 simple tips to get you started on improving your composition.

❌❌❌ RE-UPLOAD ❌❌❌ My original video got taken down because it thought a portrait of clothed children taken in 1992 by Sally Mann "𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚛𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚎𝚖𝚘𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚊𝚕 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚙𝚑𝚢𝚜𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚕 𝚠𝚎𝚕𝚕-𝚋𝚎𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚘𝚏 𝚖𝚒𝚗𝚘𝚛𝚜" Sorry if you were waiting for my next video. That one is almost finished and should be up very soon. At least this has given me the chance to edit this video a bit and add some new content.

This is easily the best photography channel on the internet. No obsession with gear, just technique and art.
  • @Mark-Huigen
❤ So happy to see a Jamie Windsor video pop up! ❤

The good thing about the re-upload is that I'm watching the video again now. I think I discovered you through this video and I was a fan after a few seconds. Your style is unique, I still love it 🤍
  • @yomismo1945
Of the countless you tubers, you're my favorite, the only one I look forward to, and even more so, Jamie Windsor is the only one whose advice I thoroughly follow. Tks a million Jaime!
  • So, this is the third video of yours I'm watching, and my oh my is it interesting. Youtube has become so saturated with "the one secret about light in your photos ! PRO TIPS" and then you watch a 9minutes video with two ads and two sponsor breaks to tell you about the flippin exposure triangle... And your videos take the time necessary to properly explore your subject, it shows research, it shows dedication and it actually helped me. For example, the calibration tool isn't something I used creatively at all, and now I can't wait to go to lightroom and play around some unedited photos on my computer. Most of all it gives me faith and inspiration to shoot some content, makes me happy that there is still a place for creators on YT.
  • When I die, I’d like you to perform my eulogy. I want people walking away thinking “I never really understood him but that speech really cleared things up for me… probably should have been nicer to the guy.” Great video. Stay well.

Your channel always has the best tips, info and comments, I don't follow a lot of photography channels but I can see it right away, you teach the photographer to use his actual inner camera on how to recognize a photograph before actually pointing the camera, each video is inspiring, well narrated and with clear examples, I don't practice photography more than casually capturing a moment with my phone, but I'm a designer and if something is true, to create good design you have to train your eye to recognize good design, it is the foundation, so it is the same for photography, the rest is practice and letting your brain do the rest. Hats off to you Jamie!
  • Good to see you back! Your video not only is a joy to watch, but also full of little gems.
  • @DavidTiptonJr

Yet another great video Jamie. What I really enjoy about your content is that you always leave us something to think about and something to inspire us as photographers.
