I only discovered Larkin Poe in mid July this year. The 21st marked the funeral of an aunt who was lost to dementia, yet just two days later I found a You Tube video from this performance of 'Mad as a Hatter '. My reaction was to think why have I not heard of these girls before ? I have since searched their music many times, to the point of becoming obsessed with finding their other performances on YouTube, and booking tickets to see them live in concert in October.

Thank you for this long comment on Rebecca's lyrics. I was a bit surprised by this song because Larkin Poe usually gives no political or religious statements. Being from the Bible Belt they try not to risc parts of their fandom. But driven by deep humanity they sometimes break their rules, e. g. by their comment on Black Lives Matter. I also love the way they tell real life stories and open their hearts and feelings until people in their audience break into tears. They are not just doing their business - they are connecting emotionally with their audience.
  • I just love listening to your reaction/analysis. always from the heart. That is the most important thing, honesty!

You should start to move a bit further in their catalog. These performances are six years old and they have developed pretty well in the meantime, while not losing their characteristic sound. There are a couple of Blues/Rock/Roots acts featuring great female guitar players that also sing really good but only they have a Megan, so in addition to Rebecca's powerful lead vocals they have these beautiful harmony vocals and the lap steel that adds a third kinda vocalish layer. That's their USP and they have sorta perfected it as much as Blues/Roots Rock can be perfect. Still I like these older performances, they are not worse, just different. I only recognized that you have only done these ones so far. Anyways, there can't be too many Larkin Poe reactions, the girls deserve the additional attention.
  • Welcome to the Towber church: home of great music reactions, sometimes with an interesting philosophical twist, nothing more, nothing less. Great job M!

I was hooked on lyrics. ie.bob dylan Richard in Canada

Interesting review of a complex song. Larkin Poe has toned down their stage appearance since this, relying more on the music, and working the stage better. Audiences love their live shows.

You almost grasped it with Salman Rushdie... The song isn't actually critical of Christianity - they're specifically being blasphemous to mock terrorists that use blasphemy as justification to murder, in response to a terrorist attack on a concert in Europe.

They were great back then too, but you should really check out some of their most recent stuff, they get better every year. Their newest live album "Paint The Roses" with the Nu Deco Ensemble is incredible. Suggest you check out "Turn Your Tears of Blue to Gold" or "Way Down South" videos from that album

They are actually both beautiful brunettes, now. Your turn to join the brunette crowd, where you obviously belong! 🤭👍❤

They sure seem ambiguous when it comes to religion. They kind of belong to a religious music tradition with blues-spiritual-gospel overtones that come and go, yet they seem open to criticize religion as well as noticed in this song. Other songs they sing have a more general spiritual/religious touch such as "God Moves on the Water" (a cover) and "Burn with that Holy Ghost Fire". "Preaching Blues" (a cover I think) is a more joking song.
