Hello and welcome! My name is Anton and in this video, we will talk about the massive megatsunami that was discovered on September 2013 and that we now have learned a lot more about

These underwater landslides are also responsible for excellently preserving marine fossils
  • As a kid, I always went to a beach in Nova Scotia that was known for it's big waves. One year we went back to see it after some form of monster wave hit it. The entire place was wrecked. There was one bottom heavy boulder the size of 4 pickup trucks, that had formally stood upright that was on it's side and the entire boardwalk was demolished. The ocean is terrifying and glorious.
  • Chicagoans are very familiar with seiche waves in Lake Michigan. Every few years you see a story about wind-driven seiches bouncing back forth across the lake causing coastal damage
  • I love Anton when he comes down to earth like this. Of course, he's lovable the rest of the time, too.

The wave I experienced doesn't come close. It was only around 5f, but it turned my patio into a pond. And that's why I banned my mother-in-law from the diving board.
  • The east coast of the south island of New Zealand north of Christchurch has been historically hit by a different form of these tidal waves. Off the coast, there is a deep trench, on the landward side there is a stair-like configuration of the ocean bed. Over time there is a build-up of silt at the top of the trench this is deposited both from the land and carried by ocean currents from the north and south of the affected area. At some point, it becomes unstable and collapses into the trench this rapid collapse pulls the water away from the land and when it rushes back it causes massive damage on the land and for some distance inland. This type of tidal wave is not earthquake-driven but has the same landslide cause as the examples you have discussed

The scope and range of subjects Anton takes on is just amazing! It's what I like about this channel(well, one of the many, many things I like!). Every day, every video, is something new and different that teaches things from all directions and subjects!
  • There's a Norwegian disaster movie about this phenomenon called The Wave. It's pretty cool.
  • @barblc3202
in 1929, an earthquake caused a major submarine landslide that created a tsunami that caused a lot of damage in Newfoundland. The Geological Survey of Canada has also mapped a lot of submarine landslide scars off Canada's Atlantic coast - because of all the glacial deposits that are unstable, and because of turbidity currents.

Thanks Anton for mentioning the vajont tragedy! I am born and lived some 50km away from the site of the dam and i've been also been visiting it, it still gives an eerie feeling just to imagine what have happened. There's an actual movie which has been done on the tragedy, maybe you can find it with english subs!
  • @montylc2001
With everything else going on in the world it's not surprising this never made the news. Great video.
  • @mikescholz6429
My first year of college, 2004, my roommate spent the Christmas break in Thailand… he and his friend had been at the beach since early morning and went back to his friends home to eat (slightly more inland and elevated) and 15 minutes after they got there the wave swept in.
  • The information on thus channel is so accurate it should be a channel on television.👍I'm sharing it with everyone I know.
  • @terri241
Consistently high quality, scientifically accurate information on earth sciences, physics, and astronomy. Thank you, Anton! Your presentations are always professional in content, but delivered in a friendly tone aimed at making important scientific discoveries accessible to a general population. Brilliant work, Anton! Thank you for your fascinating science-nerd broadcasts! 😊 🎉
  • Great vid, there was a major landside in March 2020 causing a 100 meter wave in a lake on the central coast of B.C . at Elliot creek into the Southgate river which runs into Butte inlet. It is also a good read.
  • @oldbag3043
90% of volcanos are under water do you think they could play a part in this as well Anton
  • @mpetersen6
Some of the largest landslide tsunamis have been associated with flank collapses of volcanic islands.
  • @Chris-wz5yd
One of the Canary islands is splitting in two and it is predicted that when it does it could cause huge (near biblical type) destruction on both sides of the Atlantic ocean.
  • @chrisvickers7928
There was a mega tsunami in Elliot Lake. A nearby mountain side from the Coast Range collapsed into the small lake leading to an estimated 100 m tall tsunami. It went unobserved except by seismologists. This lead to a huge debris flow into a nearby fjord called Butte Inlet. A helicopter flying over Butte Inlet spottet the brown water and mass of logs allowing the precise location to be found.
