Piped & Zipped Scatter Cushions - Decorative Pillow

Published 2020-11-24
Piped scatter cushions are a good staple for any curtain maker or upholsterer but getting them just nice can be tricky and those pesky zips cause everyone stress. There are also many different methods to the making, the way the piping is cut, where and how you join the piping, how and when you overlock the components and what shape you cut the corners.

I've created this video showing the making of two piped and zipped cushions.
1.) Rounded corners, bias cut piping joined on the bias centre bottom of the cushion, overlocked front panel after the piping is sewn on and standard zip with flap.
2.) Square corners, straight cut piping joined on the bias bottom RH corner of the cushion, individually overlocked components and standard zip with flap.

If you're here just for the zips the skip to 26 minutes in.

  • I've watched about half a dozen videos on piped zipped cushions. Yours is the best I've seen. Everything clearly explained and shown. I think I am ready to tackle my first cushion. Thank you so much.
  • Wow, this is AMAZING! I've always struggled putting the zip in and creating a flap - your technique is so much easier than the one I had been using. I am very grateful! Thank you so much!

Justine you are a star!. I can't thank you enough for your clear instructions and videos. I have successfully made piped tiebacks for the first time and now piped cushions with zips. I wasn't new to the cushions but I've never been happy with the zips. Now I am delighted with them Many thanks. Anne Graves

I’ve got this on my tablet and following you, with pauses, as I sew, though I’ve watched it several times through first. I’m reupholstering vintage rattan chairs, attached round seats with welting and half round loose backs. Thank you so much!
