Plenty of television viewers will remember the on-screen relationship between Andy Taylor and Helen Crump on the beloved 1960s sitcom The Andy Griffith Show. However, not everyone knows the real life romance that the show’s two stars shared behind the scenes. This romance was notable not only for the immense passion involved, but also for the fact that it was a secret affair. Of course, the two stars in question were Andy Griffith and Aneta Corsaut. The two stars hit it off almost immediately, and were entangled in an extramarital affair pretty much by the time that their on-screen counterparts were dating. Although Aneta was single at the time, Andy had been married for over 15 years and had several children.

The relationship between Andy Griffith and Aneta Corsaut was atypical for an extramarital affair in many ways. Andy proposed marriage to Aneta multiple times over the course of their romance, but Aneta always turned him down. Despite this, they remained lovers, and close friends once their romance ran dry. Although the two eluded marriage in real life, their on-screen counterparts in The Andy Griffith Show became married in the spin-off show Mayberry R.F.D.

Furthering the relationship between the two stars, all of Aneta’s final roles before her death came as a result of her friendship with Andy. She was given minor roles in Andy’s successful 1980s drama Matlock, culminating in a final appearance during the show’s final year, 1992. After this, Aneta reprised her role as Helen Crump in 1993’s The Andy Griffith Show Reunion before passing away from cancer in 1995. She was never married, and left behind no children. my favorite Andy's love interest in the show was Peggy (Joanna Moore) the way she always said " Andy, I loooove it " with a southern accent 😊

I loved the one where Opie had a crush on Helen and Barney (not knowing it was Helen) pulled out his book of poems, had Opie call his "girlfriend" on the phone and Barney would recite one line at a time with his hand over the phone and Opie would repeat it to Helen. When Helen finally asked if someone was there WITH him, Opie said "Nobody, just Barney". Well when Opie left to go and see Helen (she asked him if he could come right over") the phone at the Sheriffs Office rang and Barney answered and Helen went volcanic on him! Don Knotts ALWAYS could make me laugh with those faces of his. What a GREAT show that was and I still watch it weekdays/weeknights on TVLand from 4 pm to 8 pm.

Just watched some of these again & I love all the actors. Watching Ron's acting & realizing just how talented he was at such a young age then as Richie . I grew up watching him & the movies he's produced. He's really had a huge impact on most of our lives. Of course all the actors did but I'm most impressed by Ron. He's always exuded wholesome kindness, gentleness & major talent. Glad he decided to share his work & life with us . Love those good clean shows. Much respect to them all. Miss those days.
  • Andy and Peggy ...perfect together ..loved the beautiful song they sang on the front porch Peggy came to cook for Andy and Opie whilst aunt Béa went out of town à few days !!!❤

I guess my favorite is where he and Helen get trapped in the cave and when they find a way out, they find out Barney has gotten a team together to dig them out. They feel bad and crawl back in and get saved so to speak by Barney and then everyone calls him a hero. And you know how Barney acts when that happens. Loved it.

I didn’t like the way she would get overly angry about little things. I’m not sure if the directors made her do that or if that’s how she thought she should play it. But it always made me not like her as much as I could have. Andy’s best girlfriend was Peg. Tatum O’Neals mother. They should have kept her as his love interest. She was absolutely beautiful.

The best Helen moment came in an episode with Ernest T. Bass. When Barney starts spouting off how he is going to take care of Ernest T., she replies "He'd kill you!"

My favorite episodes of the show in general are those where Barney mistakenly thinks Andy and Helen are getting married. There are several. So funny!

My favorite with Helen was when Barney mistakenly sees the two of them ( Helen and andy ) in the jewelry store and is sure their getting engaged. Aunt Bea redecorated the bedroom, they throw an engagement party 🥳 hilarious!!
  • I still love watching The Andy Griffith Show. One of my favorite episodes was when, Andy needed $25 for a fishing license and Barney thought it was for a marriage license. Hahahaha

Maybe she was wise enough to know, if you cheat on one spouse, you'll cheat on them all.

I had no idea they had a romance off screen. I can see how it would happen however. I liked all of the characters in this show. I think it should be shown in schools these days to teach children how they should behave and get along with others. The world could use a little of this now.

She didn’t want to be seen as “the other woman that broke up Andy’s marriage”...? So not marrying him would make that less true? 🤨🤷‍♀️

Andy Griffith show is excellent. I watch it Monday through Friday here in Hamilton Ontario on CHCH.

My favorite episode: Dinner At Eight. Thanks to Goober mixing up phone messages, Andy has to eat 3 spaghetti dinners & 1 was at Helen's house. LOL!!😂
  • I always respected Andy until I was dining at a popular restaurant on Nag's Head Island, NC. A little girl, maybe 10 or 12, approached Andy while he was eating for an autograph, I was too far away to hear what he said but he made her cry and she got no autograph. I loved the show but that experience put some question marks on my concept of Andy Griffin.

So many people put Andy on a pedestal but you have to remember that Andy Taylor was an act. Andy was just like any flawed person .
  • Helen Crump was my LEAST favorite character in the whole run of this WONDERFUL show. I never liked her character...so either the writers wrote her as an angry, cold and jealous person or it's how she chose to act it. Either way, our household never warmed up to her. Of all the love interests written for Andy, my favorite was and still is Miss Ellie. She was in the cast and sang beautifully in my all time favorite episode, the Christmas episode. I never, ever tire of this show ❤️
