N.B: There is a factual inaccuracy in this documentary - Ovid was actually a Roman poet, not a Greek one.

This is a video on the Spanish painter Diego Velazquez, and his brilliant art. All rights are reserved to The National Gallery, London, and I believe that this is fair use, as it is no longer for sale at the gallery (as far as I know, and the website has listed the DVD as 'out of stock' for a very long time), the art is in the public domain, and I am uploading it for an educational purpose. If anyone objects to it being here, just whip off a message to me, and I will take it down straight away, no contest.

  • Many painters are masters of light, composition and color. Velazquez not only excels at technique but he’s also able to paint the soul and psyche of people in a very honest, unique and powerful way. Very few photographers are able to portray emotions at this level with a camera. It’s just mesmerising.
  • Lovely documentary. Velázquez is one of my favorite artists, he was a genius and that's why he still remains relevant today.
  • Diego Was amazing. Less was more, and without pre-sketching. "Uncanny". Even though I am a man of modest means, I have managed to see many of the greatest works of history in my travels about the world. 62 years of adventure, and counting. There are some incredible museums out there. Get busy, there's a lot to see. You don't have to be rich to have adventure, just imaginative, resourceful, and passionate about life and history. Stay in hostels, cook your own food, and live like a billionaire. It's all in your perspective.

Top marks with the 'honour of merit' for the "best" video ever to be presented by Youtube on artists. There was so much intense interpretation and evaluation of the artist's technique and of him as possibly the foremost "Portrait artist" (apart from Rembrandt) of the old masters. It's amazing that he had the boldness to overcome the restrictions of the somewhat "deformed" Hapsburg king Philip 1V and did not follow the same rigid approach to portraiture of other flatteres in portraiture that went before him. How he 'got away' with portraying Pope Pius X as the most devious, conniving and despotic figure is inconceivable---no wonder Francis Bacon chose that one portrait as his main subject matter for ridicule!!!

Velasquez, one of the greatest painters to have ever painted.
  • Velásquez's masterpiece is clearly "Las Meninas" the portrait of "La Infanta Maria Theresa". I had the privilege of seeing it in person as a young teenager. It is far more impressive than in this video. The brush strokes, color and light make you understand the nature of the subject far better than a photograph. Portaiture has become a lost art and needs a revival ! The public needs to see it as the most difficult of art forms to depict a subject's character.Genius of the Velásquez sort is very hard to come by.Thank you for the professional curator narration.

  • Thank you for this wonderful Velazquez biography and triunfante life as a painter. Incredible work of educational material that you presented here is a privilege to have it condensed on this UTUBE . We , the audience , are privilege to be able to watch it from our homes!!! Thank you.
  • Thank you for this lovely doc. I like the tone of voice and the slower tempo of the presenter/writer. Beautifully made product.
  • Somehow this painting of the little bridesmaid has stuck with me since childhood, the clothes were so oo fancy, I never realized how large it was.

Velasquez painted his manservant magnificently ---no contemporary artist comes near to this skilful portrait

I'm not surprised don Diego didn't see Rubens as an enemy. In fact, nobody ever could stop themselves from loving Peter Paul, from kings to paupers, nobody could resist his irresistible charm. But it also says something about Velasquez, to feel secure enough and honest enough to meet great genius and not feel threatened by it. Because he was great himself, as great as anybody can possibly be.
