2019 update version is now available!

Ride the Rails in Real-time:    • CTA's Ride the Rails: Real-time (2019)
Ride the Rails in Time-lapse:    • CTA's Ride the Rails: Time-lapse (2019)

The CTA has more than 224 miles of railroad tracks across Chicago and surrounding suburbs, serving the agency's eight rail lines. In an average weekday, there are about 2,200 train trips making stops at the system's 145 rail stations. For more than 100 years, the 'L' has offered a unique perspective of Chicago.

In the first-ever documentation of its kind, the CTA has created a real-time ride along the length of each rail line. Shot in HD, you can now experience the 'L' like never before from the vantage point of the rail operator. You can even transfer between lines.

Hop aboard, and enjoy the ride.

The red line: varied, modern stations and especially clean!!! Chicago is much nicer than NYC! Dear inhabitants, you can rightly be proud of your city! Greetings from Bavaria (Germany)!

In 1980s, I took "L" Dan Ryan (now red line) on way to my school and got off at Adams St. station everyday. I have noticed something is different now; projects are gone, the trains no longer go to and stop at Adams, Madison, Randolph stations in downtown, then west side to Oak Park...Oh well, I live in Minnesota, and already miss my hometown Chicago. Anyway, I enjoy the ride again while I watch the video. :)

Thank you CTA for putting up these awesome videos in real time! Other transit agencies should take note and make videos like this of their rail lines.
  • Been a long time since I rode this line. Happy to see that the CTA appears healthy and not being allowed to fall apart like some other major metros. Always loved Chicago, where I grew up. Sad that I cannot go home.

What a great memories while in college time, I rode this red line train from Harrison to Howard for five years from 2013 to 18... and one time went to Chinatown for some K-Pop Ambassador Business and I had to drop out by class... what a great memories it was.
  • @leereeder2293
Rode every CTA line anywhere when I needed it and I appreciate the people that were the drivers for these L lines.
  • @axysdnyd
I absolutely LOVE Chicago and the CTA "L". No other city has such a unique transit system that gives such awesome perspectives of the city. I lived in Chicago for 3 years and rode the "L" daily, never got old. I really miss Chicago

I am a Canadian living in Northern Saskatchewan Canada. I was only in Chicago in February of 2013. I spoke to quite a few people in Chicago, as we had passed through on the train to Florida from Minot, North Dakota. So many people love the city of Chicago. It was neat to see the video. We only have 10 people in our hamlet. I love the trains. They were featured in the Fugitive movie as well.

  • @ThatcherChannel
I love the braking and acceleration sound the new 5000 series makes. Almost etheral the way it echoes in the subway segments.
  • @timaltic230
Brings back so many memories. I lived in Chicago during a summer in the mid 80's and used to spend many Sundays just riding the trains.
  • @granskare
when I was a kid in th 1940s, the fare for me was .04 cents :) and the cars were very old, no like the stuff of today no red or green line but my days are over now :)
  • @MPIEMDRailfan4
The State Street Subway continuous platform is the longest in the United Stated; it stretches from Lake to Jackson, more than 3 city blocks.
  • @robadams8057
This reminds me of when I used to take the Red Line from 95th Street to Roosevelt. From there I took either the Purple or Brown Line (whichever came first) to Diversey, and then I'd walk to Clark Street. Tough commute when it was cold.
  • It’s been a long time since I seen this video I was 10 years old when this video came out and it’s 2022 time flies I love the part when the cta red line goes underground the subway is the best part of riding the red line
  • @DerekDtj
Wow, what an incredible presentation. I keep finding myself grabbing the arms of my chair when we go around the sharp curves with NO safety margin except the street below!! Again, all of you should be congratulated for the making of this totally unique view of your "toddling town." In closing, Go Cubbies!!!
  • @Robbi496
I rode this line on it's first Saturday of revenue service in 1969! It was faster then, but they did a good job of rebuilding it1
  • Maybe not the most interesting of the "Ride the Rails" videos, but probably the longest and straightest. The first part is the best study of the vanishing point one could ever hope for. So its easy to stare at and lose yourself in the moment. And a nice long piece to have playing on the second monitor while one is doing work on the first one. Thanks, C.T.A.
