Rachel Ruysch (b. The Hague 1664-1750) was the so-called “subtle art heroine” of the Baroque-era Netherlands, but her accomplishments were monumental – as one of the most in-demand painters of her day she’s considered the best-documented woman artist to come out of the Dutch Golden Age.

This is Several Circles, where we tell the stories of extraordinary artists from across history and the present day. We believe art history content should be accessible—free of charge and impenetrable jargon, but abundant in fascinating facts, illuminating analyses, and entertaining anecdotes.

Each episode is written and hosted by Rachel, an art journalist-turned-copywriter at The Met, and produced by Jason, a New York City art technician. The fuzzy feline superstars are Jimmy (big and bushy) and Tallulah (small with thumbs).

We started this channel to indulge our fascination with what compels an artist to create the way they do, and we intend to grow it into a vast and celebratory archive of the weird and wonderful eccentrics who constitute the art history continuum.

I learned about Rachel Ruysch from this video and went down a bit of a rabbit hole. This summer, when I saw one of her paintings in person, my excited hand flapping set off an alarm at the museum.

Great to hear about more artists not covered as often in art history. Thank you!

Great to learn about an artist I wasn't aware of, and a nice little history lesson about Tulip Mania, which is officially the Dutchest sounding thing I've ever heard, thrown in as well

Excellent video, very educational and engaging, YouTube needs more of this type of content, and certainly algorithm has to pick this up a bit more because it was thanks to Reddit that I came upon this golden channel
  • What a fabulous video, thank you! Very interesting - I’m about to do a floristry course about flower arranging in Dutch Masters in the Golden Age. How perfect to find this in my recommendations.

i love this. also curious, are you going to do more modern artists?
  • I have to ask, is that your leopard gecko? I love lizards, and so am also intrigued by the paintings of Schrieck. I didn't know there was a female still life painter who made more than Rembrandt in his lifetime. Her paintings are spectacular, and the formal composition, color arrangements, perspective, lighting and modeling are at least as aesthetically satisfying as most purely non-representational paintings I've seen. And ten kids. Her oeuvre is an amazing achievement. I quite enjoyed this video.
  • I would love to learn more about mannerism, so it would be awesome for you guys to do a painter in that style
