Every damn thing about this record is perfect. The chord sequence, the melody, the harmonies, the arrangement (gorgeous little electric piano stabs, sinuous bassline, lovely and understated guitar licks), and my GOD that lead vocal SLAYS 👍🏽

Daryl Hall wrote this for his collaborator/girlfriend Sara Allen. Her sister, Janna Allen, co-wrote their hit Kiss on My List. Janna died of leukemia in 1993 at age 36.

I had a German Shepherd dog named Sara that used to smile and show her teeth when she was happy. I had her for 15 years. I still cry to this song.

Darryl Hall still sounds the same and going strong. Look up Darryl’s House where he invites and jams with top singers. Such beautiful music with Hall and Oats. Thank you and best to you both
  • That Philly soul always comes through. It's no wonder that they're the best selling duo of all time. "One On One" next. You're welcome. Have a great day!

The "Smile" tenor hook was Oates. They were in perfect sync with all their songs.

A timeless classic. Daryl Hall sings so effortlessly, it ain't fair.

Short and sweet, probably one of my favorite Hall & Oates songs. This and "She's Gone" - nothing else beats them. 1970s songs of theirs are much better (for me) than their 80s hits.
  • Danced to this with my wife many times in the seventies. Eventually we switched to "Didn't ' i Blow your Mind This Time". Great tune from the 70's.

Hall & Oates put 29 songs into the top ten in the US during the course of their career. "Sara Smile" was their first big hit back in 1975. I remember hearing the song on the radio back then, the "you and me forever" break stood out. I was eight at the time and found the song "mushy". That said, today I think it's a classic. When you're ready for more from them, check out some of their other hits: "Rich Girl", "She's Gone", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "You Make My Dreams" among others.
  • I had a lot of Black friends growing up whose Mom's were in LOVE with them White boys that sang RnB! The urban stations in Atlanta played them during the 80's.
  • Hey Asia & BJ, This is what we called back in the day a "Slow Drag" which was slang for one of those real good songs to "Slow-Dance" & "Grind" to!!! It's so soulful and it's one of Hall & Oates greatest hits of all time!!! Mic Drop!!!

Hall & Oates were a big part of the Philly sound, also called Philadelphia Soul or Philly Soul, funk influences and lush instrumental arrangements, often featuring sweeping strings and piercing horn that laid the groundwork for Disco. Fred Wesley (trombonist of the James Brown band and Parliament-Funkadelic) said it was "putting the bow tie on funk."
  • @SRGots
I'm so glad you finally did this one! This is one of the first Hall & Oates songs I can remember hearing (I turned 2 in 1976 but my mom was always playing music so I remember a lot.) I've always loved it.
  • @Noelle0026
Gotta love that Philly sound! Those background vocals with Daryl’s lead vocal is definitely magic.
  • @amypatchen8263
One of their best, but you can't go wrong with Hall and Oates!
  • @tekknow-9419
The way Asia was smiling in this you'd almost think they were singing: Asiaaaaaaaaaaaa Smiiiiiiiile!!!!
  • @Ritaholden1
They called Darryl Hall blue eyed soul. No explanation needed once you hear him sing.
