  • They walked on stage absolute unrecognized nobodies from the west coast as a last minute addition, and changed music forever in 1 performance. Thank you to the band, the most fortunate schedule change ever, and Mescaline.
  • They Trippin' their butt's off and then delivered one of the most iconic performances for the ages!
  • @DocRock71
This performance is what got Santana on the map. At the time, it was the largest gathering of people in US history, nearly a half a million people. It was an inflection point in US history and marked the culmination of the "hippy" movement and culture, which began 2 years prior in 1967's Sommer of Love. Literally every single performance at Woodstock is a class piece of musical history in the making.
  • This was one of the epic historic performances by a single individual at Woodstock. That came from 20 yr Drummer Michael Shrieve, who was the youngest musician to perform at Woodstock.
  • @bobbyc3895
The drummer is Michael Shreve, who was 20 at the time (second youngest performer at Woodstock). His solo here is considered one of the greatest drum solos of all time. Absolutely iconic performance.

Santana was scheduled to play at 8:00pm that night. So, being hippie rockers at Woodstock they sourced some Mescaline and dropped it. Their plan was to have a nice mellow afternoon trip and be back down to earth by showtime. 20 minutes after they ate the Mescaline the director told them "There's been a cancellation you boys are on in ten!" So these guys are straight trippin balls right now while this videotape is running. Carlos said his guitar neck turned into a snake and kept twisting and turning on him! Somewhere on here in the interview with Carlos where he tells the story, you should check it out. (Edit) 500,000 at Woodstock Check out: I'm going home by Ten Years After Star Spangled Banner by Jimi Hendrix With a little help from my Friends by Joe Cocker Let's go get Stoned by Joe Cocker Those'll be fun
  • The whole band was high, and they went on a musical ride ....... !!!!
  • You were looking at approximately 400,000 people watch Carlos on mescaline. All he wanted was to stay in tune and on time. During the performance, in his mind, his guitar neck turned into a snake. He was holding on for dear life. What a performance.
  • The amp he is jacked into is still the amp he uses today on his shows. It is treated with extreme care for it is an artifact that is still being used. I have been blessed with uncasing it on the IN and casing it on the OUT several times and I hold it with awe each time. Carlos is a wizard at making on-the-fly adjustments to the Amp and his guitar to continuously be in tune while conditions are changing with the Amp and the temp/humidity/pressure/and static charge of the air change throughout a performance, even during a cold front passing producing a thunderstorm with heavy downpour of rain in the middles of a midwestern summer. It is a talent and connectivity with his equipment that very few performers achieve in their lifetime. The best Santana show I have witnessed over the years is when Carlos and Steve Winwood get together. They are like kindred souls that one seems to bring out the best in the other.
  • I'm here for Biss yelling "More Cowbell" !! 🐮🔔🔔 All day Bisscute ❤️💛

Woodstock is the grand daddy of all festival concerts. Three days of band after band who all became legends. In Santana's case, this was the performance that put them on the map being that this show was just a couple weeks before the release of their debut (first) album. Pretty much only known in and around the San Francisco music scene, Woodstock and their upcoming album made them globally known.
  • @OldHead71
That must have been quite an experience seeing all of those amazing bands in their prime✨
  • @Mikeluvdrums
Richie Havens performed the song "Freedom" at the 1969 Woodstock festival after running out of material during his set. Havens was the first performer scheduled to play at the festival on August 15, 1969, and was originally scheduled for an hour-long set. However, traffic delays prevented other performers from arriving on time, and Havens ended up playing for almost three hours. Very powerful and emotional on the spot improvisation
  • Great reaction. That was Gregg Rolie on Hammond keys. Gregg was a founding member of Santana and Journey. 😊😊❤❤
  • Gregg Rollie is the guy playing keyboards. He became the keyboard player and did some lead singing for “Journey”. The song, “Feeling That Way”, is an example of his singing.
  • I saw Santana in the early 70's and it was a long hour and half to two hour non-stop jam with the only vocals being a chorus every once and a while. It was fantastic. This video brings back fond memories of that concert.
  • I really hope this is the long version, Biss. If not, somebody steered you wrong. Looking forward to it either way. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
