It’s one of the most under-claimed benefits which up to one million people could be missing out on - ‘Attendance Allowance’ is a benefit for those over 65 living with an illness or disability and can pay more than £400/month. The benefit aims to keep people living at home independently for as long as possible, so the money can be spent on everything from a gardener, cleaner, bills and food or taxis to and from hospital appointments. Martin Lewis explains more about this lesser-known benefit.

I’m an armed forces veteran , I suffer from severe PTSD from my tours in Iraq and afghan. I had to battle dwp and their so called medical advisors at a tribunal to get pip. A NATIONAL F**KING DISGRACE!!! I won, the judge seemed embarrassed by the whole farce and awarded me pip without the dwp advisor saying not one word for their defence. Whether armed forces or not, don’t back down; and take it to tribunal. It seems like dwp intentionally make it hard so you give up. Please don’t give up!!! I read that the majority of cases that go to tribunal do get awarded. I had everything medically prepared for evidence yet dwp awarded me no points , yet the judge awarded me the higher awards . DWP and your so called medical advisors at CAPITA are NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE!!! DISGRACFUL JOBWORTHS AND GRIFTERS WHO ARNT WORTH THE WAGES THEIR PAID!! NEVER BACK DOWN AT TAKE EM ALL THE WAY TO TRIBUNAL. Good luck and god bless you all 👍🏻
  • My Dad was entitled to attendance allowance after losing his bladder etc to cancer. Unfortunately we had no knowledge about this allowance for over 10 years and he struggled so much. I found out the last few years of his life and got it for him and the relief he felt was visible. He shouldn’t have to “claim” when he’s had such a serious illness, it should have been automatic.

I told my Brother about this a few months ago. He has been waiting for a hip replacement for 3 years and for the last 16 months he hasn't been able to leave the house because of the pain and my Sister in Law has had to help him down the stairs every morning, help to dress him and wash him. Luckily he has been able to get this extra money. It's a good job I listened to Martin. Thanks.

I am registered disabled and eligible to claim Attendance Allowance but having to do battle with the DWP who do their utmost to make sure nobody gets disability benefits no matter how ill and disabled the claimant is!
  • My top tip for applying for benifits. Makesure you do your homework about the benifits you are applying for. Go online or ask for help at citizen advice. Once you know what you need? And how to apply for those benefits? You will find it abit less stressful applying for these benefits. REMEMBER you paid into this benifits system, you deserve the benifits you apply for. YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT BENEFIT YOU APPLYING FOR. because otherwise you will be at a disadvantage. Because if benifits advicer knows you don't know what you want? Then you will be turned down. DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST ❤
  • I've been waiting 2yrs for psychology. Is all they say is if you are feeling suicidal take yourself to A and E. You aren't thinking rationally when you're at that state so you aren't going to take yourself to hospital

My son is facing brain surgery for his epilepsy , yet has only been awarded the lower pip ! Benefits system isn’t working ! Always so much talk of people who are sponging off the state and yet so many people genuinely struggling . I can’t work , he’s had two seizures this morning , but because he’s on lower Pip I can’t claim attendance allowance !

The problem with p.i.p is it is based on what u can do rather that what u cant do. Even if you volunteer you will be deducted points because you can communicate with other people. One point can mean the end of a reward
  • @HullRupture
Are they overhauling PIP for every condition by introducing this voucher scheme? What about people with learning difficulties who are economically disadvantaged from gaining employment. How do they survive on a voucher for equipment or therapy? That's how I interpreted the intended changes. Disgusting from this government.
  • @Jo10371
Age uk is amazing and helped fill out forms for attendance allowance for my mum and got it first time. They also had someone come out and help fill out power of attorney forms too.
  • I know two people who have PIP on the grounds of mental help who have lost their money in the last month. The Government is lying to you Martin.
  • Mel stride has today said this October it will be imposed. So i am totally confused martin. This is a very big stress on me as i have a disability and can’t cope with this extra worry.
  • There needs to be longer segments on important issues and phone-ins. It's too rushed.

Martin Lewis and Gary Stevenson (Gary’s economics) -both absolute legends and the people’s champions 👍

As someone with certified qualifications in mental health and mental well being this tory government will create chaos for us therapists

18.00. The fact that a person is wealthy does not mean they are heartless. He is a caring man who has helped countless people on many issues. It seems to me your comment is purely based on jealousy of his personal finances.
  • Why does Kat always have her hand in front of her mouth when she is speaking it’s not good presenting.
  • @gavjav1
Im all up for people with physical or mental disabilities/issues getting the help they need, But I took what the government said was to get people back into work who can work because going to work will help a lot of people get over there mental health issues as activity is key to any sort of recovery of this kind of problem. There is unfortunately a lot of people who play the system which spoil it for people with genuine problems who desperately need this help. People who need this help should be informed of this once an issue is confirmed by a doctor/ professional.
