"We're still geeks, just geeks with really big swords." Love that line. Great doco!

Best times of my whole life were spent in the SCA. Great video...thanks for sharing. Miss my squire brothers...
  • I am old SCA from the mid 1970s. My SCA persona is William 'the Wolf' of Blackcastle, AOA, OSS. To answer your question. I participated in almost every tournament/war held in Atlantia (when it was a principality and then as a kingdom) from 1975 through 1986. I left the SCA after my break-up with my first wife (Baroness Bethany of Wiltshire) but I rejoined in 2012. My health does not permit me to compete in heavy fighting any longer but I now make maille jewelry.
  • Good to find this still up. My first leg armour, one of my first public tournaments.
  • OK, I watched it at least 4 times at Borderwar, and have watched it at least every night since, as well as emailing to all my email list. I still resent the camera being on me when talking about ugly armour, and being scared of the glave. I wasnt scared, just unprepared. Top video.

OMG, this is great. Looking for Part 2.
  • ha ha ha, I love the war noises! I use them also to explain the battles!
  • @Fargbollen
I <3 SCA! Wars are great, doing crafts is also great you just need to find something you're good at. And you get to meet people from all over the world because the SCA is truly worldwide, the largest medieval society by a huge margin.
  • @Parrow
Nicely put together vid. Definitely going to show this to my shire next practice... course, we've got a war to attend to.
  • Very cool. I may look in to doing this in my Barony. Where are the other parts of the series?

To Anyone Under 18 who wants to Fight Heavy Combat here's what I suggest You do. Join the SCA talk to the Older Fighters and Tell them You want to be a Squire to Someone so they can Teach You how to fight. If Your Lucky You Might find someone who will Help You make Your First Suit of Armor. A lot of People in the SCA know how to Blacksmith. Being a Squire to a Fighter is a Good Thing. You may not get to Fight in Full Combat, but You can Learn to do it Outside of it. I know of Women who have become Squires to Fighters & when it came their Time to Fight they eventually became Knights themselves & while You're a Squire You can Earn Awards for doing Other things & getting a good reputation as a Squire. It usually takes a while to make a full suit of Combat Armor and by the Time You're Old Enough to Fight Heavy You'll be Ready to Fight.
