Throughout the history of the Academy Awards, it has never really felt like the Academy itself gets animation. They acknowledge it, but it’s very hard not to feel like it’s seen as a second class citizen in the cinema world. This video might be framed as a ranking, but it’s really meant to take an in depth look at their nomination and award tendencies over the past 23 years, and determine if they take the category seriously, or if they’re mostly just tossing Oscars to the most recognizable studios. But it’s also about taking a look at ALL 99 FILMS ever nominated for this award, and hopefully shedding some light on the lesser appreciated nominees.

Here are some really interesting statistics from a section I had to cut out of the video because this was a behemoth! Pixar has the most wins with 11, AND the most nominations with 18, meaning they win 61% of the time they’re nominated, and 47% of the time total Only SEVEN films that Pixar has submitted for the award have NOT been nominated, meaning they have a 72% nomination rate They have an 18% share of the TOTAL nominations in the history, nearly 1/5th If you loop Walt Disney Animation studios in with Pixar as they’re both owned by Disney: The have 31/99 nominations, giving them about 31% of the total nominations They’ve won 15/23 of the awards, meaning they win 65% of the time Laika has submitted 6 films and been nominated 6 times for a 100% nomination rate However, they’ve never won, giving them a 0% win rate, oof Of all 99 nominees 54 are CG animated 28 are 2D animated 17 are Stop Motion animated CG animated films have won 19/23 years for about an 82% win rate 2D animated films have won 2/23 years for about an 8.5% win rate Stop Motion animated films have won 2/23 years for about an 8.5% win rate Pete Docter has the most wins with 3 and is tied with Hayao Miyazaki for the most nominations with 4 Pete Doctor wins 75% of the time he is nominated Shrek is the franchise with the most nominations with 4, if you include the Puss in Boots spin offs Toy Story is the franchise with the most wins with 2, still the only sequels to ever win the award

Jack Black being genuinely enthusiastic about WALL-E winning the 2009 Oscar over Kung Fu Panda is sweet :')

Horses are infamously difficult to draw. James Baxter, the backbone of Spirit, is an industry legend because of his incredible ability to draw horses. Animators look for any excuse not to draw horses if they can. People have refused work because of them. The fact they got enough willing people to make a 2D horse film and it looks that good is insane.
  • Calling John Lasseter disgraced every single time he is mentioned is so fucking funny
  • @clayturtle9256
Man it was a bold take to put Shark Tale at number 1 but I respect it
  • @josemunoz152
Bro congratulations, you got this out before Schaffrillas Productions did!
  • @mothersbasement
Watching Anomalisa lose its Oscar to Inside Out was the first moment I was like “oh, the Academy really doesn’t get it, huh?” So I’m glad to see it at least took home the Johnny
  • @freakyfriesday
The Spongebob Movie being snubbed in favor of Shark Tale is an actual crime.

"Constant accidental 9/11's" is not a phrase I expected to hear in an animation review but I can't say I'm mad about it.
  • @Walking_Spinel
I think Shrek doesnt realize or accept how lonely he really is until Donkey comes along and openly accepts him. He's been rejected by everyone in society his whole life so he's basically embraced that image. He becomes scary and mean because that's how people thought of him. Over time you become comfortable in your own space and you accept that you're unloveable by the rest of the world. But when someone actually decides to be nice to you it throws you for a loop because you believed for so long that you were incapable of being liked or loved, but now youre being reminded of all the hate you've endured this whole time and realizing that it didnt HAVE to be that way. I'm having a hard time coming up with similar examples in fiction at the moment but if i come up with some I'll update this comment. Just my thoughts
  • Johnny: wishes Lilo and Stitch got more attention Lilo and Stitch: received three sequel movies, a series and two separate animes
  • @bijikedelai
it's so frustrating to learn that Satoshi Kon never got nominated while his work constantly influence a lot of Hollywood films to come.
  • Fun fact: Eddie Murphy in Shrek is the only voice acting performance ever to get an acting nomination at the BAFTAs
  • @jamieohjamie
"Lilo and Stitch never got the attention it deserved" To be fair it got two sequels, a tv show, an anime, and a TON of merchadise.
  • @theworstofmykind
The injustice of Happy Feet winning and Paprika not getting a nom at all, unbelievable.

4:06:42 “how are there not constant accidental 9/11’s” is probably my favorite out of context line in this video
  • After watching the whole thing, I wanna say two things... 1. Thank you for giving the time and attention to the nominees that are not as talked about much, especially Boy and the World and Robot Dreams. 2. Thank you for the positivity on the films that are overhated from the majority and on the films you hate. It made me feel a little better after seeing reccent news and other sad things I saw. YAY POSITIVITY!!!!1!!!111!!! p.s. I hope Schaffrillas gives you a shoutout
  • @UncleFlutus
I’ve only just started the video but I really appreciate your willingness to talk about the positive aspects of Shrek despite not liking it yourself. I think that’s the mark of a great writer. I love hearing about how people may not personally enjoy pieces of media but still bring positive spins on it. It’s easy to tear down something you don’t enjoy, but I find it a lot more impactful and intellectually interesting to discuss the positives of said media. I like balance!

Someone must have let you into the kitchen at Casa Bonita because who let you cook like this???

Man I remember as a teen, during the early 00s, the depressing realization that 2D animated movies where phased out so fast all of a sudden. I remember the sadness when I found out The Princess and the Frog was gonna be Disney's last 2D animated movie. I love and enjoy 3D art and have so much respect for the people who excel in that field of skill, but I wished new technology didn't make older mediums obsolete or irrelevant or less profitable (in the eyes of executives and shareholders).
