  • You should put a screen on your overflow pipe so that the fish can't get out when it floods

That first one you caught in the creek was a red ear sunfish or known more commonly in the south as a shell cracker… They have crushers in their throat so they can crunch a snail or small freshwater clam and crush it up and get the goody out on the inside… Hence the name shell cracker… That’s one of the hardest pulling fish in fresh water pound for pound… They are VERY FUN to catch when they get some shoulders on em… I’ve caught shell crackers that were a couple pounds and about 14 inches long… They’ll out pull a bass of equal weight any day of the week.. They get that sideways run going and they’ll be pulling drag on 4 pound test like it ain’t nothing… It’s a lot of fun with an ultra light. If the pond on your property is still under construction you should make a sand and gravel bottom in like 2-10 feet of water for a spawning area… Most fish want a sand or gravel bottom for spawning. Bass and panfish especially.

Even if there is a spring flowing through your pond to add water. You should put a couple solar powered pumps in there it’ll help out a lot.

Love the old school style vid, you should make more of these

You need to put the minnows in the pond so the bluegill can have something to eat.

I would recommend buying some redear sunfish or pumpkinseed sunfish (depending on where you are in the country) for snail and parasite control. I would also recommend stocking FINGERLING bass. Don't go catching 1-2 lb bass from a neighbors pond and throw them in this fall. There will not be enough appropriately sized forage for them to thrive. For reference I just stocked my 5ac lake in Georgia with 1000 bluegill, 250 redear, 1000 fathead minnows per acre. Later this year I will add 50 largemouth bass fingerlings (2") per acre. There is a science to this, so it is confusing to me why your family would spend 100s of hours building this pond and then skimp out on $1000 worth of quality fish to stock it. The pond can still turn out just fine, but stocking it yourself instead of following proven stocking recommendations can be the difference in the pond being "great" as opposed to "world class". I was happy to hear you emphasize the need for true bluegill and pass over the other "bream" species. Please continue to stay away from crappie as well if you care about good bass fishing.

Me and my kids enjoy your pond videos! We are glad things are turning for the best.
  • Please more videos on that pond. Love your channel. It always makes me smile !!!😊

If you want fish structure take some Christmas trees and put a block on the bottom of each one and set them up in the pond and it will stand up like a tree if you do it right
  • Glad to see a full length pond stocking vid you should bring the bunker back to
