Could this study give us some insight on feeding frequency?

I have had many dogs. I have always fed them once a day. My chihuahua lived to be 16 yrs old. I never had any issues with her at all. I now have a husky who is going to be 9 and a pomeranian who will be 8. They both eat once a day. Not kibble. Fresh food. And they get a probiotic daily. I feed them according to whats going on in my day. I try not to feed them later than 7 pm. Sometimes my days are busy and I cant feed them earlier but they don't seem to mind eating whenever. Except for breakfast. They don't seem to want anything before noon.

I just started feeding my two dogs (1.5 year olds) once a day in the morning. I was doing the time-restricted feedings twice a day, but I found the time constraints difficult on my day to day life. So, in order to maximize the benefits of ketosis/fasting and also adjust to my lifestyle, I've switched them to once a day. First benefit I witnessed was their overall increased appetite. One of my dogs would sometimes not finish his food in the morning. Second is that they were less picky eaters. They used to be skeptical of organ meats, but now they will finish their entire plate no matter what's on it. Also, it works so well with my schedule since I don't have to worry about feeding them again for the rest of the day.

38 dogs in my lifetime, all but one lived past the age of 16, with the oldest being just shy of 19. All fed once a day. Pups, up to 10 months of age, I’d feed more often because they burn up so much energy.

Hunger pukes is a real issue. I do a full day 24 hour fast every couple weeks, giving a larger meal day before but couldn't get away from hunger pukes so started giving some bone broth on the fasting days which has help tremendously
  • I’m so glad you made a video on this! I always listen to my dog when it comes to their meals. During the summer one of my dogs does not want their breakfast so I feed once in the afternoon/evening & during the winter time she is very interested in eating more so I’ll feed twice! All dogs are definitely different but I still make a point to fast my dogs once a week due to the amazing benefits!

My 2-year old Pomeranian used to eat 2 meals a day, in the morning and at night but recently she's been refusing breakfast. I take it as a sign of her being picky. So instead, I feed her meal in the evening /at night only and since she's hungry, she begins to show signs of appreciation that the food set down in front of her is precious!
  • My dog only prefers to eat in the morning, her entire balanced raw meal. I’ll feed a snack in the evening but she’s not too interesting. She doesn’t get hunger sickness because I tend to feed at 7am every day. My family is shocked when they found out she only eats one meal a day…. And I did feel guilty. I’m glad to find out that it’s okay!

I feed twice a day because my 16 year old chihuahua came from a situation of abuse unfortunately and due to that he has some food insecurity and anxiety and it heavily stresses him out to not have a morning meal. It’s something we tried to change a few years ago when we got him but honestly he has already lived a long time and has heart problems and we want to focus on giving him a happy and stress free end of life. So after trying for a few weeks to work toward one meal we quickly just let it go so he could just be happy and comfortable knowing that he is now safe at our house and we will always have food for him when he needs it :)
  • My dogs are under 2 years old so I still feed twice, but in a shorter eating window (within 5-6 hours). I hope to switch them to one meal a day in the near future for the health benefits!

Your videos are amazing! Thank you for teaching such important information!

Excellent video.. I feed 1 meal a day in the evening, complete raw food diet. He is a 2 years old Malumute/Lab 90 lbs. He gets in 3-7 miles a day on mountain hikes running/walking at his own pace, this is why I feed him late in the day. This is just a preventive measure to reduce the risk of bloating or flipping stomach which is deadly.. So far so good just doing the best we can... Thanks again!!
  • I started feeding my Rottweiler once a day after the puppy phase, usually at around 8-9pm. She is currently 10 years old and still behaves like a puppy. She did start suffering from pancreatitis about 3 months ago, but my vet said it could happen to any dog this age and is random. So I just give her digestive enzymes and low fat food (Hill's science diet light) and she is doing great! I hope I get to share many more years with her.
  • My GSD is 3 years old and has been raw fed (DIY BARF) since I got him. Currently he eats twice a day. He thrives on this routine and it suits me too. Bloat is a huge worry as he is a GSD and his dad, as an example, got Bloat - granted his dad is kibble fed. I prefer twice a day as it gives me peace of mind plus he is not allowed to bounce around for a good hour after eating. Many times between meals while grooming him his tummy growled loudly in hunger despite being fed enough at meal times. I know he probably would not manage once day without hunger barfing frequently then - yes I understand the feeding at different times to manage this issue. For now I will pretend that he, as a canine, is hunting and catching small prey at least twice a day so he does not have to be too hungry in between meals.

Thanks so much, this video has educated me and made me realise Im feeding my two dogs way too frequently, going to make gradual changes and Im sure they will be better off for it 👍🏻
  • I feed twice daily aa i had two staffords with cancer within ten months of each other .my boy sadly passed three year ago aged 13 and a half and my girl i lost just a month ago she survived the cancer as the vets could remove it with my boy they couldnt .she was aged 14 .my boy had stomach cancer i also switched to raw when i lost him and i then started twice daily as i had a puppy who needed more frequent meals .my boy is very active i just couldn't bear the thought of him going hungry .it also seems to have kept my boys weight down feeding twice daily .it could just be a coincidence as when i was younger and we had family dogs they was always fed once daily .thankyou for the video 😘❤
  • A friend of mine feeds her two dogs, once a day in the evening. They are healthy and active. When I was growing up, most of the dogs in my neighborhood were fed dinner leftovers every night, as their only meal. They were all fine.

My dog is active fairly active and goes to dog parks on the weekends when we prefer to feed him twice to help support his energy levels because when we go to a dog park we let him run around freely and play with other dogs for an hour or two sometimes even three hours which is when he eats twice, but on weekdays when he doesn't do much we feed him once a day and this seems to work well as he gets more food when he's active. On the days he goes to a dog park we make sure he rest's and drinks plenty of water so that he isn't getting tired or dehydrated no matter how long he stays.

My Boston Terrier just turned 1-year old, and I had only been feeding her once per day. But, I noticed she had much more of an appetite than her male sibling, who lives next door, so I added a light morning meal. I am transitioning her to a commercially made raw diet, so she is eating raw and Blue Buffalo Life Protection puppy food. Her current bag of kibble will be her last, and I will eventually transition her to a DIY raw diet.
