Training a chinchilla to sit in your lap

Published 2020-12-19
This was session 3 with this eight month old blue diamond girl. I start by taking them out of the cage and setting them in my lap. "The floor is lava" until I say otherwise. I don't touch them while they are on my lap - it is a safe spot right now. I do pet her before I set her back on the floor to play.

You can see she does jump off, that is fine just calmly collect them and put them back. The first 5 sessions I make them wait 2 minutes, then set them on the floor to play. After that I extend it to 5 minutes and start working on other tricks too. Chinchillas are very smart and catch on quickly.

The trick to successful training is your response time. I only correct her when I feel her gather to jump or she actually jumps. My reaction is direct correlation to the effort she is putting in to attempt to leave. Training takes time, just be patient. =)

This video was made back in 2015, I forgot I had put it on Youtube.

Every video I watch about training chinchillas and they're so calm it's unbelievable. Mine is constantly zooming around. No way I could even attempt to grab hold of it and place it on my lap!
