Published 2019-08-14
VERY RARE silent footage of a TWA Martin 404 arriving at Indianaolis in 1960! A lovely slice of Americana! "Martinliner" footage of any kind is VERY TOUGH to find, so any footage is good footage! great footage from 1960! I was 4 years old but this brought back a lot of memories when I visited boston logan international airport and saw all these nice propliners and early jets! a super time to be a kid for sure, thanks for sharing,

Awesome video. What a find to see a Martin 404 arrival! So nice to see everyone dressed up and meeting right at the gate. What wonderful memories of a time gone by. My how the Indianapolis Airport has changed from the Weir Cook days. I flew there for my first time in April of 1972 aboard a Delta Airlines DC-9 32 from Evansville, IN, just a 25 minute flight but I felt like royalty. It was not every day that we were able to fly somewhere. The service was great. So wish passengers today could experience those days again. Thanks for sharing this bit of nostalgia. Keep those classic airliner videos coming. I would love to see some Lake Central footage, especially their Nord 262s, Convair 340's, and Convair 580s which also served Evansville.

That's an America you're never gonna see again.

Just to pick someone up at the airport warranted a suit and tie! I like how close the parking lot was to the terminal as well. Great find!
  • Notice how the family is well dressed, just to go to the airport. And the arriving visitors too. Today most people are in jeans and other casuals.

I love how the kids just walk off, no stewardess escorting them, no papers to sign.
  • @tomcarr4630
Look how proudly those children walked off of the plane!

Pretty cool. Air stairs, those were the days. Aww man, too bad the clips didn't have quadrophonic stereo sound of those round motors. ;D

Wow. What a memory jog this is. As a kid, I flew out of then Weir Cook to Chicago in 1957. Final destination was Phoenix. I flew out again in 1971 to an eventual landing in SanAntonio and in 1973 to JFK with an ultimate destination of Adana, TR. Thanks for posting.

Sigh. I remember my early youth, when my parents (my Dad worked for United) would take us on trips and we always had to be well-dressed and on our best behavior. Much nicer than the morons who get on planes in pajama bottoms these days. What the heck are they thinking? Also, two unaccompanied minors on a flight - I remember when my sister and I flew back from New Jersey where our relatives were and had no adults with us. No big deal, they just put us on the plane and my folks picked us up when we got to our destination.

As always, I am exceptionally grateful for all who contribute and post these videos that indeed prove that at one time, everyone’s parents were young too. At least for me, they suddenly flood my head with memories. At the time of this film, cities such as Indianapolis were not merely feeder locations for regional jets to haul people to some airline hub. There was a lot of commercial air activity. Despite my temptation to share so much about those-days-gone-forever, for fun I’ll leave you with some information I could not help but research. I pulled up an old 1960 TWA timetable: https://www.timetableimages.com/ttimages/complete/tw60/. From it, I found that TWA had 3 Martin flights to and from Indianapolis: 441, 411, and 442. They were tedious for me to find, since I really loathed the timetable style TWA used, but nevertheless fun. At least for me, this type of research is really not tiresome, because it refreshes so many memories. As a side note and for those who enjoy reliving nostalgic events, here is the index page for numerous past airline timetables: https://www.timetableimages.com/index.htm. Again, a hearty thank-you for this post. Please, keep’m coming!

The good old days... notice how happy everyone is. No one is cursing and spitting at each other. What went wrong?

Great footage. Looks like the nose-wheel is about to take the brunt of first contact at 0:08 . Was this nose down landing normal for these planes? How about imagining kids today being allowed within feet of spinning props 0:33

People have to watch this short video so they know what the dress code really is all about.
