Duisburg Chain Factory: Custom Anchors for the World's Ocean Giants
The Duisburg Chain Factory produces anchors for various watercraft, from small police boats to large container and cruise ships. CEO Volker Domagala and his team ensure each ship gets the right anchor.

Custom Anchors for Every Ship Class
Anchors range from small six-kilogram models to gigantic ones weighing up to 18,375 kilograms, like those made for the world’s largest cruise ship set to sail in 2025 with 9,500 passengers.

Precision and Craftsmanship
Each anchor is crafted with millimeter precision. Tobias Kost scales and arranges the parts digitally, cut from rolled steel. The parts are cleaned and welded together.

Tradition and Innovation
Founded in 1896, the Duisburg Chain Factory initially forged anchor chains and has focused on ship anchors since the mid-1950s. For 33 years, Volker Domagala has been relying on his team's expertise and craftsmanship.

Advantages of Welded Anchors
Unlike cast Asian competitors, Duisburg’s welded anchors are more flexible and less brittle. Each anchor undergoes a load test at 20 times its weight, while in use, they handle up to nine times their weight.

Challenges and Quality Assurance
Not a single Duisburg anchor has broken, though they can get lost due to foreign objects in the seabed. This is not due to anchor quality but external factors.

Future Prospects
The demand for anchors remains constant with new ships being built and old anchors needing replacement. Domagala believes anchors will remain essential for the next 150 years, ensuring Duisburg Chain Factory’s continued production.

Conclusion
The Duisburg Chain Factory exemplifies tradition and innovation in the maritime industry. With custom, high-quality anchors, the company ensures ships can anchor safely and reliably. Volker Domagala and his team guarantee the durability and robustness of their products, making them an indispensable partner for maritime operations worldwide.

I and a friend used my dads 19 ft. open bow boat to dive a wreak off Los Angeles harbor. After visiting the wreak the anchor was gone! Scary, we were miles from shore with no one on the boat. After searching we found the anchor getting caught on a rock jetty about 2 ft. high. We were in 90 ft of water. Never did scuba diving without someone on the boat after that.
