Tim, I guess one of the reasons you"ve created your excellent video content and series is because Garmin hasn't. You provide so much more understanding and clarity than Garmin has in their resource materials.

I was so frustrated trying to use the Garmin videos. Good job on making using Basecamp a lot easier then the Garmin folks.

TIm, I have followed your first four videos and they are super. I have learned so much! You have gotten me over the hump of fear of using BaseCamp. Thank you so much. Reg

Can't tell you how many times I've come back to your Basecamp videos for help. I'm just not in Basecamp enough to remember all it's nuanced route making features. But when I need to make a route, the instructions and tips in your videos are invaluable. THANK YOU for making these!
  • I've fumbled my way through using BaseCamp to navigate to every courthouse in 22 states plus many other trips. I stumbled across these videos by reading reviews for a new Zumo XT to replace my venerable Zumo 550s. Wow, this series of videos has been immensely helpful. Thank you.

What a great tutorial. Thanks so much for spending the time and effort for explaining this "six-left-thumbs" of a computer program for Garmin. They should be compensating you well.

Great video. I fumble my way through basecamp once yearly for an annual trip. Your video will make this process quicker. The way points or shaping points on the wrong side of the road (or in my case usually in a paddock next to the road) is a trap for the inexperienced. Your explanation of how to centre and check each of the points will make life way easier for me. I'm not sure if you have covered the thrill of trying to share routes with friends for use on their garmin units that have different map versions or routing preferences set differently. That's another trap for newbies. Thanks again.

Tim, thank you so much for clarifying so many of the mysteries of BaseCamp with this video. This is the first of your videos that I've seen. I've wrestled with BaseCamp a few times in the past, but felt that it was much too un-user-friendly to waste so much time on trying to figure it out on my own. Even trying to read Garmin's attempt at documenting their program made it even more frustrating. I very much appreciate your taking the time to explain the proper use of shaping points. Garmin's own BaseCamp manual only mentions shaping points once and it falls abysmally short of explaining what they are and how to use them. In your video, after you tweaked a route the way you wanted it (Alt + click and move), you mentioned adding more shaping points. I watched you do it, but at first didn't realize that you moved your mouse ever so slightly to make the "rubber band" visible, which is necessary for creating additional shaping points. On my first attempt, I did as you said, but not as you did. I held down the Alt key, then clicked my mouse and nothing happened. No shaping point was created. Then I went back and watched your nearly imperceptible movement of the mouse to accomplish that task. You may want to embellish that fact in another of your training videos for clarity. Something else very frustrating about Garmin's software is that it renames streets with its own naming scheme. A street with a second name of Crossing is known as Xing to Garmin. It's as if they intentionally make their products almost impossible to use until you learn their specific nuances. In this short (for BaseCamp) video of yours, you've filled in many missing gaps in my understanding of how to use this previously frustrating tool and I successfully created my first route for my GPS unit that will go the way I want it to without it having a mind of its own! It was especially helpful to learn how to get rid of those doggonned Interstate U-turns! Thank you very much!

thanks for these videos. If you're historically a google maps user, switching to Garmin can be overwhelming. But now that I'm getting used to Garmin and Basecamp, I'm beginning to prefer it. Much more control over my routes and I love that I don't have to rely on cellular signals when out riding!
  • Excellent information, especially the Hover over route to see distance from Start!! And more great tips and Thanks
  • this series is superb, I still don't understand why basecamp is so complicated and not user friendly, but these videos at least improved my knowledge of base camp substantially

Best Base Camp tutorials I have come across, thank you Tim
  • @odowdski
Excellent video! I have used Basecamp for years, and still learned more useful tips here!
  • Thanks again! I use basecamp for bicycling as well as my car and motorcycle. Be sure to always designate the profile in the properties. It will calculate routes differently depending on your selection.
