I just noticed, in this moment, Andy saves Red, by giving him a purpose once he gets out on parole ... Instead of being so afraid and taking his life like Brooks did, he went to that place Andy told him .. Such good movie
  • Smart move from Andy, he doesn't tell Red what's under the stone so it'll keep him guessing and stuck in his mind and that way, he will never forget those instructions.
  • I was 14 when this movie came out. When the credits rolled my dad looked over at me and said "You dont often witness a perfect motion picture, today we did" welp, 25 years later and pops was on the money. RIP to my old man. He loved movies.

This film is a masterpiece from beginning to end. Flawless.

“I guess it comes down a simple choice: Get busy living, or get busy dying.”

Andy smiling while talking about his future is him actually realising how close it is to happening. He's already dug the tunnel and has planned his escape to perfection. All that stops him from leaving is himself and his ability to overcome the sense of comfort he has established within Shawshank.

One element that is often overlooked in this scene is the lighting. Notice how they are in the shadow at the beginning, then when Andy says, "Get busy living, or get busy dying," he walks into the light. Then as he tempts Red with his secret, Red also walks toward the light, though not completely out of the shadow. It's perfect foreshadowing for the end of the movie. So so beautiful.

    "Sh*tty pipe dream" - foreshadowing I didn't notice before

No explosions. No sex. Nothing. Just two guys talking. Wondering about life, and their future. That's what makes this movie, the greatest film of all time.

I showed this movie to my 72 yo dad a few years ago, before he died. He absolutely loved it. Said it was the best movie he ever saw. RIP Dad.

'You underestimate yourself' is probably the most touching line in the film. The way it's delivered and its relevance is so perfect.

In that one moment Andy gave Red hope, a reason to go on.

Prison is like a "time machine" You spend a lot of time in it and when you get out, everything is changed...

"That's just shitty pipe dreams" Oh my God. The most elegant foreshadowing I've ever seen.
  • The way he says "I've been in here most of my life" is beautiful acting. You feel the heartache Red feels in that one line.

How in heavens did Forest Gump get best picture over this. This is a classic. Love this movie.

Haunting Thomas Newman score really adds to this scene.

The suspense of what lies buried there, must have been unbearable .Even if Red had any thoughts of giving up, there was still an unanswered mystery. The need for an answer must've been soooo compelling. Andy knew how to save Red ,how to keep him alive, give him a purpose, greater than any adversity. Knowing that there is something buried, JUST 4 YOU, likely kept Red awake, for countless nights.Who could ask for a better friend? Brilliant indeed.

2:44 on first viewing, your first impression is that Andy is bitter and angry at his situation and is slowly accepting it. However when you know what he does later, re-watching it has a completely different meaning; he's excited and nervous about his escape he has planned later that night and he has trouble containing it, but he knows he must put up a façade to prevent others from knowing. Top notch acting from Tim Robbins.
