Took the good ole Whaly boat out for a dungeness crab and fishing trip. Had to find a plce to camp first before dropping the crab pots. This camping trip was a little early in the season, so I will plan to go back out when Halibut and Salmon are running!

  • Can we just take a moment and just appreciate how much effort this fisherman does in videography. We got to see a shot of him coming in on the sandy beach. Which means he already landed, set up his camera, went back out into the water so he could show us, his viewers, of him coming into the place were he planned to camp. This is pure entertainment dedication I cannot say how awesome this all is.

  • Your best bet is to drop an anchor with a few feet of chain as you come in to the beach. Drop it 50 to 100 feet from the beach. Nylon is good for anchoring because it has stretch. Then use a bow line to tie to a log or branch on the beach. You can put some stretch in the anchor line to get to the beach and then ease off and tie your bow line with a bit of slack. Your boat will float on the water and not get grounded with the rise and fall of the tide. This system, if done properly on an appropriate beach will handle a significant tidal swing. I wouldn't trust that umbrella anchor in an unattended situation. Especially without chain. I've had good luck with Danforth type anchors but there are newer types some people prefer. Danforths stow well and are comparably light weight. Check out some YT videos ... sorry, couldn't help it. :-) Those buoys are illegal in WA and we can't keep females. Surprised both are OK in CA. Most people here use at least two proper buoys and plenty of line to help with the current issue. Also, you need weight in the pots to keep them from being dragged by current.

Thanks for being safe out there. Lost my dad a few years back when his boat flipped on a fishing trip and he wasn't wearing a life jacket which would've saved his life. You don't want your family to ever get that call my dude, it's a tough one to get. Keep havin' fun, teaching us and being safe. Cheers man.
