How's my mental health?

Published 2024-02-06
I've been using the ketogenic diet along with other metabolic therapies to treat my schizoaffective disorder. I give an update on how my mental health is, including what my experience of symptoms has been, how my mood is, and any problems I'm facing.

This is great! I have bipolar and I haven't gone pure keto, but it is still a very low sugar diet. It was life-changing. I was able to stop taking 1 mood stabilizer altogether and dropped the other one to a miniscule dosage. It is wild how much cutting most sugar/carbs had an effect on me. 3 years now I think and still going strong.

I have bipolar 1 w/ psychotic features. I started strict keto thanks to you. I am experiencing the exact same thing you are describing. I'm blown away! Hope it lasts!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I also have schizophrenia and I have been following your progress and am in week 6 on the metabolic ketogenic therapies lifestyle. It is like having a different experience of life without positive or negative symptoms. My antipsychotic medication dealt with the positive symptoms pretty well, but I was being affected by negative symptoms badly and for the last five and a half weeks I haven't experienced any of the negative symptoms. I am stunned by change after 24 years of being on the schizophrenic spectrum.

I’m so glad to hear you’re experiencing less symptoms and better sleep. Keto has been wonderful for me on and off for over 10 years. Consistent sleep with proper sleep hygiene has been a game changer as well as exercising 6/7 days a week.
  • I've recovered but I've been in an active hightened state I don't want to call hypomania almost constantly the past three years and my sleep has become completely disrupted. I have my second round of blood work coming up with Mark Hyman's Quest Labs project and I'm pretty positive I have a methylation issue but I'm seeing a Functional MD after the blood work is complete. Feeling up isn't a problem but this sleep thing really concerns me. I think one of rhe reasons you may be doing so well is you started all of this being in relatively excellent physical shape. Your personal case is quite exceptional. What's cool is you're pretty meticulous the way you've been focused on the smallest details. You're constantly monitoring, you're on top of the macros, you follow the diet strictly, you're a single person study because it's beyond anecdotal. You're filming your recovery in real time Lauren. You and your husband ate quite amazing.
  • My father took his own life when I was a child. His illness, schizophrenia, took him and dragged him from me. However, this has inspired me to truly understand the ‘sick’. I go to war with Bipolar every day. I have never seen a previous video you made. Notwithstanding, I am exulted to see the evident transition that has taken place in your life. Thank you.
  • I would love to meet you and let you talk with my son for some inspiration and encouragement! I love him so much and want him to know that what his brain is experiencing is nothing to be ashamed of, and this is when he will take the first steps toward healing. If the world would look at it with the same eyes as something like diabetes that can be treated or at the least made to be less severe and manageable/survivable, then the stigma of mental illness can be eradicated. You have offered me so much hope for him and for the future of mental health in general ❤❤❤❤❤

Thank you for sharing your journey. I started using Keto for weight loss about three years ago. You are encouraging me to check ketones. I have Bipolar Disorder.
  • @80islandia
I love that concept of “reemergence,” and wonder if this may have resulted from a combination of science (ketosis) and psychology (empowerment). Congrats on coming back to yourself, Lauren! I’m rooting for you. ❤🎉
  • @BatmanRaider
I also have schizophrenia too. Only WE know how that goes. I changed my life around too. No Keto, but a better diet with no more alcohol. Anyways, you look great!
  • @grahamokeefe9406
I find that when I do low carb diets, my energy is neither greater nor lesser, but it is definitely more even and consistent throughout the day.
  • I just came back to your channel after a while and I have tears in my eyes seeing that you´re doing better and that you have something real, tangible to guide you to hope. I´m so happy for you :)))
  • @natashaprice9917
Wooow!!!! So excited for you and your family❤️❤️❤️
  • @Silentkat1975
You look SO healthy! I just wanted to share for anyone this may help, when i transitioned from vegan after 6 years to carnivore/keto, my psychotic symptoms have subsided dramatically within less than 1 year.
  • @petersecola883
So glad you're doing well, Lauren! Thanks for keeping us updated! 😊❤
  • @samapattiyoga
Food is our first medicine -- regardless of our wellness and illness combination. Bravo on your health journey!
  • @nickynisbet6247
Hey Lauren so uplifting and encouraging to hear about your positive keto experience. Really does encourage me to keep going with my own keto journey to treat chronic depression ❤ xx
