Decluttering is something that we often overthink, overanalyze and overcomplicate! It doesn't have to be hard or time consuming. Grab a box and a trash bag and just start. Pick a drawer, closet, cabinet or pile and pull something out. Do you like this? Would you buy this again? If the answer is no, it's got to go!

Hot Mess House airs in the US on Thursday, June 17th at 8:00pm ET on HGTV. Don't miss this season premiere, it's so inspiring!

I like how you added, “Would you buy it again?” That’s easier for me to wrap around versus sparking joy.

Key point: This is not organizing. Just declutter first. Excellent advice!

This video was sent to me by God!!! I needed to hear this. Have you ever been in church and the sermon resonates with you so much that u almost start crying???? Well, this is me now. Thanks you!!
  • All of us who have been following you these past few years are SO PROUD OF YOUR SUCCESS!

Just decluttering is new to me. I stopped when you finished the drawer and did one of mine. That is easy. Thanks!
  • My clothes have always been the disaster issue in my home! Just decluttering, not organizing, has changed my life! I took a truckload to donate yesterday after watching several of your videos! Next I'm headed to my attic closet to declutter! Thank you for setting me free from holding on to stuff I don't need! :)

I watched season one of hot mess house and I am just so proud of you! Way to go, so glad you're getting a second season! What an incredible journey!
  • I watch your shows and see the giant pull-it-all-out- moments. That overwhelms me because there is too much. This one drawer, one tiny place at a time makes it seem accomplishable. You are the MOST approachable down to earth non-perfectionist on You Tube today. I firmly believe that’s why you are on television now. You are killing it! Thank you from the bottom of my messy heart.

Your tips are great! I am decluttering at the moment and will definitely use them. My favourite question so far, based on the "silent to-do list" Dawn mentioned, is, "Do I want/need to spend time organizing this item ever again?" When you make the silent to-do list loud and imagine that every item is talking to you and giving you orders like "Clean me, Dust me, Eat me, Use me, Read me, Repair me!" etc. you see why you are overwhelmed. And you will answer "NO!" most of the time. :)
  • I'm guilty of trying to go through multiple areas, boxes and closets, etc...., trying to choose what stays, goes, doesn't belong, AND trying to organize all at the same time. And yes, it hasn't gone well. I was trying to use the Marie C method of organizing. She might work for some, but not for me
  • I love that you tell people to get stuff that doesn't fit out of the closet, but that it doesn't have to be donated. For some of us, it's actually very practical to keep different sizes of clothing, and we are able to do it without shame and judgement. I like having pieces that I like available no matter what size I am without having to shop. Well worth the space of a bin put out of the way for me.
  • "We're not here to organize, we're here to declutter" Cass says as she puts all the stuff back in the drawer super organized, lol. It's just your nature by now, organize on the fly😁 But yes, great advice to not get overwhelmed, thanks girl! On to my dining room/storage room, ugh, lol

That photo frame reveal in the sneak peek was so cool! 😱🤯 and thank you for reminding us that decluttering and organizing are two different things 😁

So true, "all the things we are using are on the surfaces" and things not using are hidden away in the closet and drawers!
  • @donnarowell4058
I think this is what I needed to get going on my house. I have a lot of chronic pain & issues… I think I’ve been procrastinating for a long time! I’m so tired of my chaotic mess.
  • @bcgrote
This helps. I get FOMO when it comes to tossing things. We do have one of a kind things, antiques, signed first editions, rare things.... But then, we also have a bunch of... stuff. But to take one thing, make a decision, and get it gone, even one thing a day, will help so much!

So happy that I found your channel!!! You made more sense in how to declutter than any other channel I've seen! Sometimes the simple question of " would you buy this again" has the biggest impact and I know that decision anxiety is not fun. I have walked away from my closet clean out after removing everything and feeling so overwhelmed that nothing was accomplished. Thank you for your positive and totally inspiring video and I look forward to more amazing guidance! Thank you!

It honestly is so amazing how focusing on one drawer or one shelf at a time can allow your brain to easily go through a room. Looking at the whole room and thinking "Where do I start?!" is just so overwhelming! Thanks for the reminder. Now I better get to decluttering!! I love organization!
