This is one for all you F1 fans out there! As an introduction for its arrival on Private Sales by Collecting Cars, Chris Harris dives into the archives with former Head of Williams Heritage, Jonathan Williams, to discuss the history of the grand prix winning 1990 Williams-Renault FW13B Formula 1 car.

This car is now available on Private Sales by Collecting Cars: collectingcars.com/for-sale/1990-williams-renault-…

With a striking design that any aesthete can appreciate, the FW13/13B model is a particularly notable racer from Williams’ history, claiming three Grand Prix wins across the 1989 and 1990 seasons. That achievement is all the more impressive considering the dominance of Senna and Prost over those two years; between them winning 21 of the 32 races.

Chassis FW13B-08 is arguably the most impressive of all, securing not only pole position in qualifying, but taking its driver to outright victory at the Hungaroring in 1990, leading from start to finish.

Finding a car that has spent 25 years in its team’s private collection is unusual, but another factor that makes this chassis especially rare is that it retains the original Renault RS2 3.5-litre V10. Most of these powertrains were scrapped in period, so it is remarkable to find a car still running its correct and fully functional ‘works’ engine.

The amount of knowledge Mr. Jonathan Williams has is mind-blowing.

What a treat it would be to have a series of hour long programs with Jonathan Williams talking about each FW car from the 90’s.

This is the sort of content the cosmos wants you to produce rather than the Top Gear centrist stuff. Thank you. I hope you enjoy doing what you were destined for - I absolutely love it.

Some people still don’t realise just how good Nigel Mansell was. One of the best F1 drivers ever.
  • Please do more racing stories like this. We need more historical looks into racing than the oversubscribed world of super cars we’ll never have. Great work.

I think I could listen to Jonathan Williams and Chris Harris talk about Formula 1 for a week and still not be bored. Stellar work!

That was THE Pinnacle of the sport. 3.5 V10 manual. The sound and visual drama. Driver skills were paramount! Very unlike contemporary equipment which has more resemblance to playstation than exciting racing. Pitcrew in shorts and no helmets is just a sight to behold 👍👏

Top Gear kicking the can was the best thing to ever happen to the Internet.

Brilliant, just bloody brilliant! Great car with that amazing documented history. Chris, can we please have an extended interview with Jonathon Williams.

The thing about that Mansell story that went untold - the first time Nigel got in the car and went around the track, he immediately came into the pits and said "go to the truck and get me the softest springs you've got". After they were fitted, Nige went two seconds quicker than the car had ever gone around that circuit. That's why Patrick felt they'd wasted 1990 - they'd (at Boutsen's behest) gone completely in the wrong direction in terms of car setup.

This era of F1 was sadly before my time, but thank you for this conversation as I learnt so much!

What a machine!! I was 13 when this car was winning races, remember watching those races with my dear old dad, thanks for bringing back those memories, miss you Dad, peace

This is about as good as F1 journalism gets. The questions, the way Chris phrases them, the thoughtful answers with the degree of expertise and insight Williams has - I could listen to this for hours on end!
  • Great video. I clicked to see the car but stayed for the story. An amazing time in F1.

Wow, that didn’t feel like 17 minutes. I legitimately got goose bumps when the book was shown with the run sheets. Incredible stuff. Please Chris, more of this!

As an F1 nerd of not-quite-FW-13B-acquiring means, I’d love to be able to buy a book like the one presented here. Williams ought to consider a small run of these books for the slightly less well heeled enthusiasts among us.

Chris Harris doing best, just been Chris Harris, asking, insightful questions, more importantly, listening and then adding value at every step, we love you, Chris!
