Political Violence Puts the Function and Culture of Democracy at Risk - What is the Scale of Risks?
----------

As opponents become enemies, and partisan positions degrade the quality of political debate, is democracy in the US at risk from internal division? How might China, Russia and other hostile actors leverage the situation to their advantage?
----------

00:12:26 JP: Russian will absolutely capitalize on this to sow discord among Americans.
00:14:56 Vlad: Systemic prejudices that obstruct Russians from understanding us.
00:17:50 JP: In Trump's first term, he failed to form a stable elite around him.
00:19:11 JP: Ukraine has become a partisan issue in a way it wouldn’t under Reagan.

00:27:27 Vlad: Links between anarcho-capitalism of early 1990s with Foreign Policy.
00:29:38 Vlad: Trump will be disappointed by Putin’s ideological differences to himself.
00:30:35 JP: Trump is very well known as transactional, with a very narrow field of view.
00:32:56 Vlad: Putin is transactional in the way Trump will not be able to understand.
00:37:15 JP: Russia sovereignty is not existentially connected to outcome of the war.
00:38:06 JP: Putin's life is existentially linked to the outcome of the war, and decisions.

00:42:03 Vlad: Putin also sees his own population as an existential threat to him.
00:43:37 Vlad: Gorbachev asked Putin, why are you so afraid of your own people?
00:44:58 JP: It is akin to blasphemy to criticize Trump politically, which is dangerous.
00:46:55 Vlad: Russians outsource politics to Putin, and so give up political opinions.
00:47:53 Vlad: Admitting things are going wrong means you must question everything.
00:49:10 JP: Cognitive dissonance reduction rejects evidence that contradicts belief.

    Cheers Jonathan, as ever.
  • @Art-H
Thanks so much to Jonathan, Vlad and Jonathan. This video is engrossing, and really helped me understand the nuanced cultural and political landscape involved in this tragic war. Thanks for sharing your candid, eloquent and studied insight. Cheers Slava Ukraini!
  • Jonathan, I can't help but feel we're on the brink of something terrible, and most of us are blindly going towards the abyss. edit: Also I have to say, this has to be the dream team when it comes to deep analyses of the situation we are in.

It is a damn shame we can’t have leaders like these guys. Maybe it is two different types of human, with different inspirations and motivations. But that is WHY we should elect people who do not run for election. Ok I am just rambling. Three of my favorite people of these times.
  • This is the best conversation, explanation of the divide between "western" ideology, and Russian ideology that I have heard to date. I watch all 3 of these guys separately, but this is brilliant! I am beginning to understand.
  • @hammertoolz
Jonathan, Vlad and Jonathan... you guys could talk about anything and I'd listen for hours
  • @DarkCriimes
Great conversation. Thank you gents 🇬🇧🇺🇦🫡
  • @marijo1951
Thank you to the three of you, and lovely to see Vlad twice this evening as I watched him with Professor Gerdes earlier. This was a very stimulating discussion, but I suspect it was recorded before Trump adopted Vance as his running mate. With him as VP, Trump is far less likely to come over to Ukraine's side in the way that JP suggested could happen with the right kind of flattering adviser.
  • @drychaf
Excellent discussion again. I've said it before, but this format, and your hosting Jonathan, seems to bring out the best in all your always high quality guests. One of the best channels on YT.
  • @chris8612
Thanks Johnathan, Johnathan, and Vlad for the great discussion. I would love to see them back. There is a depth to their discussion, it's very illuminating.
  • The two men are transactional, but there's a lot of different ideas between them. One is far more worried about how he appears, the other is worried about his position, power and his own history. Neither are beneficial to their own people, the people simply don't matter.
  • @tomaszcodasz
I love Vlad Vexler political insights, he is not only genius but also thankfully on the side of good.
  • More discutions like this please. It is great to have ideas and insights bounced off each other. Gives more insight and balance.
  • @SteveOhw594
I'd like to see a panel with these guys, Ben Hodges, Timothy Snyder, Jake Sullivan and Kirby!
  • @Ecomorph1
Thanks to all 3 of you . Great discussions
