Welcome to the FIRST episode of "Movies vs. Manuscripts". A show where I analyze the differences between Peter Jackson's adaptation of "Lord of the Rings", and Tolkien's original works... scene. by. scene. Today we start with the prologue.

Watch Ep. 2 -    • 16 Changes Peter Jackson Made to the ...

I am NOT a Tolkien professor, and I haven't been studying this for decades. I am simply a fan. If I missed anything, please let me know in the comments and I will be sure to make corrections in the next episode!

By the way... I LOVE the movies. These videos are not to hate on Peter Jackson or the films at all. Simply comparing the adaptation to the original. :)

  • As mentioned in the video, with a series of this magnitude I am bound to make mistakes! I am not Tolkien expert, just a fan having some fun with you all. :) Below are some errors that people have kindly pointed out. Feel free to reply to this to mention anything you noticed I missed. 1. Anarion's bloodline did survive and his sons, grandsons, etc... went on to be kings of Gondor. 2. Technically all the rings were made for the elves, but Sauron stole some them and gave them to dwarves and men. 3. Some of Galadriel's opening words are actually direct quotes from Treebeard in the books.

The movie of "Fellowship" does Isildur no favours, making him look obsessed with the Ring. He doesn't try to conquer the world, but stays in Minas Tirith for a couple of years, instructing his nephew on ruling Gondor, and then heads north to seek the counsel of Elrond about what to do with the Ring. His escort is attacked along the way and the Ring is lost, along with the Elendilmir.

Small correction: Sauron didn't make 16 rings of power for Men and Dwarves, they were originally all meant for the Elves. But seeing how his plans failed, after sacking Eregion and taking them from Celebrimbor, he gifted them to the Men and Dwarves.
  • @KorriTimigan
But Anarion's line did survive, they ruled as Gondor's kings for over a thousand years before the line ended.
  • Jackson adaptation owes more to Ralph Bakshi than Tolkien in that lots of his earlier story-telling could be argued is a visual scene-by-scene upgrade of Bakshi's cartoon; it being the pre-visualization of Jackson's live film-version.
  • @redmo11
To be extra specific, none of the rings were originally made for Men or for Dwarves, they were all made by the Elves for themselves using Sauron's teachings, to 'ward off the decays of time', make Middle-earth 'as fair as Eressëa' etc. Then Sauron took them all during the war, except three that were made by Celebrimbor alone and thus 'unsullied' but still 'subject to the One'.

They actually do show Gil galad with the spear
  • Found this very interesting. However, I don't think Jackson made a mistake streamlining the action for an opening scene. It could've been overwhelming introducing additional characters who had no direct bearing on the story.
  • I remember when Fellowship of the Ring was first released in theatres. Folks who didn’t know it was a trilogy were so mad at the end of the film 😂😂😂.

I stumbled across these videos tonight and love them. Very excited about watching the rest. You're doing a fantastic job.
  • differences between a book and its movie adaption are not necessarily "mistakes"
  • @SirMath3w
omg I haven't realized how recent this video is before watching it. Can't wait for the follow up! Sir, you've earned your right to be followed :)
  • To be fair, the final duel between Gil-Galad, Elendil and Sauron does take place at the base of Mount Doom, it's just that only Elrond, Cirdan and Isildur are present along with the combatants.
  • I can't wait to see follow-up videos on this. I really do wish they showed the fight with Gil Galad, Saron, and Elendil. I feel like it would have shown more depth/sacrifice/cost of victory. But i do recognize they were trying to make it feel "hopeless". Also, comon man, this is a beloved franchise. We dont need fart or squeek sounds undercutting all the hardwork youre putting into your own video.
  • @yosewise
He got nothing wrong, it’s a perfect movie.
