Julian Assange has a long, complicated past. But regardless of what you think of him and what he did, you should care about what happens to him. Here’s why.
Check out two very solid documentaries on Assange for a deeper understanding of him as a person:
- Risk (2016), by Laura Poitras (we used a little footage from that doc in the intro)
- We Steal Secrets (2013), by Alex Gibney
This legal analysis from RCFP was really helpful in understand the indictment and its implication: www.rcfp.org/may-2019-assange-indictment-analysis/

“When exposing a crime is treated as committing a crime, you are being ruled by criminals” - Edward Snowden
-
The fact the government feels so threatened, means we NEED to be listening.
-
Remember guys, the highest prize for pure and honest journalism is death.

I was working at TSA 2010-2011. When Wikileaks came out, we were told not to even travel to the Wikileaks website because we might be fired or found guilty of observing classified material above our security clearance, because we had access to 'Guarded' Information. Crazy times...
-
What blows my mind is that killing innocent Iraqi civilians can be swept under the rug without any consequences but leaking publishing information about can get you jailed for multiple years.
-
The thing about calling him a traitor, is that he's not a US citizen and therefore has no obligation of allegiance to the US or its government, you can't commit treason against another country.
-
Here after the recent news, let’s celebrate this small victory together!
-
Assange, Manning, Snowden and all the people exposing the horrors governments all around the world commit in the name of "peace and freedom" should be praised for their bravery and courage and should be treated as heroes, not traitors.
-
If he made both Dems and Reps angry, he is probably a really good journalist.
-
“When you tear out a man's tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you're only telling the world that you fear what he might say.” -George R.R. Martin

The woman who blew the whistle on the crimes that Assange published served her time and is now free, the man who published them is being tortured (according to a U.N expert on the matter) at Belmarsh awaiting extradition for a violation of the "espionage act" despite not being an American citizen. If the "crime" of publishing the info was such a problem, then wouldn't the person who did leak the information still be in prison? Exactly. That is all you need to know.
-
Thank you Johnny for speaking up for him.
Assange is free! -
Most literal version of "They hated him because he spoke the truth" I've ever seen.
-
“When exposing a crime is treated as committing a crime, you are being ruled by criminals”
-
Hey Johnny, now that Julian Assange is about to be FREED, can you do part 2 of this great documentary?
-
As an Australian this really sucks because the war crime convictions aren't just happening in America we have been persecuting two other Australians for leaking documents about war crimes and sketchy business the two main ones are David McBride and Witness K
-
the funniest thing about this is that the British court system deemed the US prison system too inhumane for them to allow the extradition of Assange
-
I love how he is "being" arrested for exposing the crimes while the real criminals are the ones charging him.
-
In Croatia, they are now talking about bringing a new act for journalism basically stating that journalists would have to reveal the source of the information. It's crazy
