When the craziness was happening a friend who lived in Portland shared a lot of videos showing how overblown the news was making the situation. My son moved there in January 2022 and I've spent A LOT of time walking around a variety of areas in Portland and have not experienced anything threatening - day or night. I can't say the same about Seattle, which I didn't really like as much. My son does live in a nicer part of the city, so there is some bias in what I'm seeing. The Saturday market is in a less glamorous part of town, but still absolutely fine. I think more people need to visit and see for themselves that it isn't the horror story the media made it to be. I'd move there in a heartbeat.

Potland is one of the few cities I carry concealed in.

I worked in downtown Portland for almost 20 years, and during that time, it was a gorgeous place. I felt safe walking around at night alone. In fact, it wasn't too many years ago, after a fireworks show in Waterfront Park, my son and I strolled all over town safely at midnight. It was a treat to spend an evening there. The governor and mayor literally destroyed our beautiful downtown area. Old Town, China Town, and any part north of Burnside is extra gnarly. But, I'm glad you visited Powell's Books! Love that place. I'm glad you were able to visit the Gorge, the Falls, and see the mighty Columbia River. Life is a more 'normal' the further out you go in each direction. I'm located 11 miles east, and the devastation hasn't hit us as hard, except the cost of living. I've lived here since I was a little girl and deeply saddened to see our once beautiful downtown turn into an ugly ghetto. I'm so happy you felt a good vibe in spite of it all. We have good people in Oregon.

I have to agree with everyone having lived there 35 years ago it saddens me to see downtown and the shape it is on now. I would go visit Oregon bit would choose to bypass Portland.

We were there with years ago and it was beautiful. The international rose garden was absolutely gorgeous and we had a great time. We also visited the Pittock Mansion, loved it and the view of the city. Our biggest worry was finding a place to park! There is no way I'd go back there now, nor any time in the future, until sanity prevails. It was an amazing city, so much to see and do downtown, and it's just sad to see what has happened to a once vibrant and thriving city.

Glad you got to see the Columbia River Gorge and falls! So beautiful!
-
We were there before covid and they have a beautiful Japanese Garden and Rose Garden

Multnomah falls the zig and zaggin is the hike to the top of the falls that you can look down on the falls, from a work deck with rails.

"That was so weird to see someone pass us in a Honda Civic" ๐ probably the most classic Portland experience y'all had was that "lost" moment and the interaction on the roadside. Great stuff!
-
Im truly happy you guys got out of Portland safe. That city is truly a dangerous place. Your guardian angels did a great job.
-
Dropping the jeep seed a couple times..... love it!! lol
-
Iโm never going to Portland. Or Seattle. Nope. God bless.

Doing all the things. Good video. We have some friends that live just outside Portland. They told us the same thing you discovered. The media made it seem much much worse than it is. Thanks for taking us along.

I liked your video of Portland! You are correct about it being a beautiful area. You are also correct about the city having so much graffiti. Homeless people everywhere too! Our daughter moved to Portland, from KCMO, about 7 years ago, and she still loves living there! Of course, we have been there many times, and plan to go back many more times! We have never camped in Portland, and honestly, I don't know if I would feel comfortable/safe camping. Camping areas that we have seen around that area, seem to have Homeless people living in the campgrounds. Some of them will steal from you. I have seen it happen! It is good that you were talked in to going to Portland, Todd. You would have missed the beauty that it has to offer.
-
Glad you enjoyed yourself and that you were safe too! Portland has not been on my list of places that I would like to visit but maybe will change our minds. Thanks for taking us along. Enjoy the huddle!

Another awesome video. Thanks for sharing

Gorgeous view of the Columbia river from that bridge!
-
If I come see Oregon, I doubt I will be stopping in Portland!

I agree, I used to go to Portland every summer for a work conference. Makes me sad. Glad you were able to find some things enjoyable! And not just a tear down video, but a how you pack the back now! Been saying for a bit I want to see now since the kayaks are back there with Donkey. There was a brief snippet awhile back, but I need deets! ๐โค๏ธ
