"Ashes in the Wind" Blackblood Lament from The Outpost || Andromeda Cripps

This is a weird one, folks. There was, on the CW network, a fantasy show called The Outpost. As far as I can tell, very few people watched it. Within that show, there is a culture and race of people called Blackbloods. In their culture, and summarily in one or two episodes, they have a special funeral ritual involving a lamenting song. THIS is that song!

But wait. It gets weirder. This is NOT the song as presented in the show. I did some digging to discover the original lyrics and their translation, and learned that they had been CHANGED to “better match” the music. Now, I know this is a made-up language and text, but as a composer, that is a RED FLAG! You change the MUSIC to accommodate the text, NEVER the other way around! So, I took the original text and reworked the melody slightly to accommodate it, with proper prosody.

So now you’re asking, why???? Well, listen to the song!!! It’s so beautiful!!! It’s also not been covered anywhere on the internet, and the original can ONLY be found on the composer’s Soundcloud, as there is no soundtrack for the season it featured in. I’m not really a crazy Outpost fan, but this song was too gorgeous not to cover. I chose to do a version inspired by some medieval and renaissance vocal ornaments, for that medieval fantasy vibe, then arranged the two verses to represent a quiet, restrained grief as well as a fierce bemoaning scream. The end result should shake you, and I hope it does!!

For those of you who did watch The Outpost, this is the song Wren sings for the lost Blackbloods while she spreads their ashes into the river. For those who don’t know the show, that is the significance of the lyrics! Spreading cremated remains into the river is supposed to carry their loved ones, and their grief and guilt over their passing, away to the other shore.
