I don't know if it's just me, but the music in this game drives me insane. The repeating 5 second loops are absolutely maddening. It makes me feel lost and sad and frustrated. I just want something to change. I don't know if that's the point, because if it is, man, the person who composed this song did a really great job. I'm not saying the music is bad, it's just how it makes me feel.
  • Despite the fact that she never speaks, Madosuki is easily one of the most fleshed out characters in all of gaming.

Had I not known this was from Yume Nikki, I would have pegged this as music from a Silent Hill game.

Yume Nikki reminds me of something I wrote once, in how it feels to look at. It had no real meaning, and was meant to baffle analysis, referring to all sorts of things through the lens of something differentiated from reality by removing the limitation of things making sense. No meaning, just words and thoughts and memories and images and actions all jammed together in a jumbled mess with hopes it would connect and fit, unaffected by anything of permanence that trying again couldn't solve within certain limits, Characters wander around, changing sometimes but ultimately unchanging overall. That is, until finally you gather up all the pieces you were able to find, and put them together, and then the main character goes away, ending everything and leaving you puzzled as to what it might have been about in the first place. Vast stretches ignored, inaccessible, or seen and mentioned just barely, or right there in front of you and not even relevant, exist and are seen and heard but not really anything more than symbolism wandering in backgrounds. This game is quite good and much better, by the way. However, I am probably just misinterpreting the massive sandbox of wild mass guessing. Also, Yume Nikki is at, what, v0.10? It might have a huge amount of unfinished content not put in yet, or just fixing things.

This is one of the creepiest soundtracks I have ever heard in a game.

  • Yume Nikki always had this... cold, yet tight and suffocating atmosphere to it. It's nearly impossible to explain, but it felt deeply personal and almost romantic in a way, getting to see how Madotsuki thinks and how the outside world has affected her. It always had this coldness to it, it reminds me of the feeling on going around a city at night with your family, the lights and excitement of the modern world serving as a contrast to the inheritely cold and lonely feeling that night brings. There was always this tight, yet exciting feeling when seeing the depths of her dreams, and trying to piece together what happened. It's a feeling that I think only Yume Nikki could ever create, although if there any games with a similarly sounding atmosphere, I would love to hear it.

N o s t a l g i a ๐Ÿฅ€ Btw I've been a big fan of this game for a really long time in this life and i'm glad people can understand the game in their own way and the fact that the game is special but underrated at the same time.
