  • Astrud Gilberto's voice conveys innocence and purity. Perhaps this is because she was not a trained singer. She had not been coached to develop vibrato and slick commercial presentation. She was a natural, not in need of artifice. And then there's the detachment, cool but not cold. Somehow she's distant, but still there. After you haven't heard her for awhile, you are drawn back in, exactly where you want to be.

I have a fond memory of driving my six year old daughter home from school one day, and I was playing this song in the car. She starting humming along; She said "I like this song!" I said "It is a nice song, isn't it?" "Yeah" she said "But I don't understand what the man is saying?" "Well, he's not speaking English. He's speaking a different language. Portuguese." "Oh." she sighed. "And I don't speak Portuguese." "I don't either." I reassured her. "It's nice to listen to though." My daughter is all grown up now. She went to college and developed a talent for studying linguistics! Maybe she'll learn Portuguese one day...

I always play this song when I think of my daughter laura. She died fifteen years ago and she was the epitome of the girl from Ipanima. Such? A beautiful girl that she was shy. Folks used to stare at her she was so beautiful. And she was "tall and tan and young and lovely."

My mom knows Portuguese, although it’s not her native language. It’s her favorite language, I never really understood why..but now I know. I’m trying to learn it currently, and so far, it’s very pleasant. I can’t wait till I can sing this song with my mom.
