The combination of having fibromyalgia, being an older mom with a child who has more health needs than typical has made my art and the income I make from it LITERALLY a lifesaver. Thank you so much, and know when you support me through Patreon, buying art, or even just commenting on, liking, and sharing my social media posts, you are the reason this is all possible for me. You are supporting a living artist, and it means so much to me!
  • Yes yes yes to the abstracts!!! I would love to see more abstracts in watercolor, there aren't many on YT!! Thank You!!! ❤ and I agree, you should paint what you love, if that happens to be abstract-so be it!
  • @KateColors
Thank you, Rachel. There's a particular artist here who constantly asks, "Did you use 'local color' when painting that?" Followed by, "What are the colors you use on your palette?" She irks me, if you can't tell. I'm glad you explained what local color is and where you know it from. I'm relieved to know that I've known this all along through the teachings of Helen Van Wyk, a still life oil painter. She explains it in concepts of light and dark, highlights and cast shadows, and reflective light. Thank you. This was a great light bulb moment for me. I love painting abstracts, too; so, I'd love to see a workshop or paint-along. ❤
  • @nanab9963
Do those abstracts that you long to do! Your work's wonderful, and I bet there is something amazing waiting to break out. Don't worry about being taken seriously. Your excitement will shine through.
  • Thank you, this has helped a lot. I look forward to watching you and getting to know you better
  • Wonderful learning video, Rachel.....You really covered a lot of territory.
  • My aha was how helpful an underpainting is and how important a palette knife is and how to use it. I'll always remember the first portrait I did for a friend whose wife passed away and he wanted a painting of her face. He chose her wedding portrait, and I remember how she came to life when I put that tiny white dot into her eyes.
  • @fizzzy2342
Great video Rachel! Thank you for reminding me to tweak up local color. Soo helpful and especially makes a big difference when dealing with really bad, washed out reference photos! Also yes please make a video about abstract watercolor! I think it would help a lot of us to loosen up and just play with the color to see what it can and will do.
  • @trinidiana
Great video, I learned so much. And yay to the abstracts!! I would love to do some abstract tutorials
  • @hummerlady54
Thank you for explaining local color. I sort of got it but this helped even more. :)
  • Your Green abstract was stunning! Please frame it and put it on your wall! Thank you for this video I loved seeing all that work and listening to your tips. And paint more watercolour abstracts!
  • @spktme
As always such a great learning video filled with beautiful work! 😊
  • @jaefrankindy
Thank you Rachel, I always feel like I've learned something from each of your videos! ❤ I've watched some of the old ones and you have improved in your teaching style!
  • Love this video Rachel! Do I recall correctly that you also had an entry in Splash?
  • @smoothsketch
@21 min discussion light on light, dark on light etc....I said 'aha' then cracked myself up because I recalled that the video is about 'aha' moments
  • @Diego_SanCA
I enjoyed looking at the splash book, but often as you were speaking, you covered the painting with your hand so we could not see it. Maybe you need a little pointer
  • @alinakirk4433
G'day, I was wondering if you could make a different abstract painting that demonstrates/highlights each of those points? Just thought that might help them stand out more? If that doesn't sound fun then don't bother, I believe if it's not fun then why do it? (Philosophy for art not whole life lol)
