Relics From George Washington's Coffin

Published 2023-12-28
The passion for souvenirs transcends time. I was reminded of this when I received an email from Harold Peach, who watched my video titled "In 1837, George Washington's Remains Were Disinterred. Here's What Was in the Casket." Peach shared a story about a recent trip to the Isle of Wight's Osborne House, where he saw a relic from George Washington's casket. Peach mentioned that there are probably other casket relics out there. I went down the research rabbit hole and here's what I found.

"Life on the Civil War Research Trail" is hosted by Ronald S. Coddington, Editor and Publisher of Military Images magazine. Learn more about our mission to showcase, interpret and preserve Civil War portrait photography at militaryimagesmagazine.com and shopmilitaryimages.com.

I grew up in the 1970s & 1980s. I took for granted our inherited liberties which we're now watching be revoked or diminished. The worse things get, the more precious these relics of Washington become. He's the father of our nation & those vanishing rights we've lived by were the result of his courage.
  • While certain newspapers and political adversaries were critical of Lincoln’s Gettysburg speech, Edward Everett wrote afterwards to the President, “I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes.”

You are a machine cranking out these videos! As usual, the research is top shelf. So interesting and entertaining - not to mention educational! Keep up the good work!

Way to go, caught yourself saying Lancaster incorrectly and fixed it! Those of us from there, greatly appreciate that effort.
  • Thank you for all the time and research that went into this incredibly informative and interesting video. This is a bit off topic , but something I found interesting while watching a video claiming that Princes Diana was not buried on the little island on her family's estate as claimed. The person who made the video said that she's under the floor at her family's church. He also said the small cathedral holds the remains of George Washington's grandfather.

That is so cool that he was held in esteem even by other peoples of other country
  • Yep Edward spoke first , I believe for 2 hours! Lincoln spoke under 15 minutes. No one remembers Edward ‘s speech and we cannot forget what Lincoln said that day. At the moment however Lincoln thought he had failed in his Gettysburg speech that day.

Edward Everett delivered a long winded speech over two hours in length, prior to Lincoln‘s, rather short, Gettysburg address. Lincoln, after the address, and the ceremony was a bit despondent, thinking that his speech of two minutes, was so short that it would not even be remembered. However, several days later, Lincoln received a note from Everett stating that his speech, that is Lincoln speech, was brilliant, and would indeed be remembered.
  • Okay, I’ll chime in, my understanding is that Edward Everett spoke before Lincoln at the dedication.

Well, thanks to you, off I went on a wild goose chase and it wasn't even my goose. " Henry Clay waved a piece (of the coffin) on the floor of Congress, as a symbol of past unity ['and as a warning voice' from the grave to members of congress 'to beware, to pause, to reflect before they lend themselves to any purpose which shall destroy that Union which was cemented by his exertions and example.' "] I just love little obscure facts holding on for dear life to the shirttails of history.😏
