Central Park Five: The statement of Antron McCray

Published 2023-02-23
On the night of April 19, 1989, a pack of 30 or so youths from East Harlem rampaged through the northern part of Central Park, assaulted a number of pedestrians, and raped a young female jogger. Five of them were tried and convicted on charges of rape and assault; they became known as the Central Park Five.

A couple of days after the incident, suspects were questioned by police detectives and then questioned by Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Lederer. This video is excerpted from the questioning by Lederer of Central Park Five member Antron McCray.

Contrary to popular myth, fed by works of fiction produced as "documentaries", the suspects were treated with respect, read their rights, offered food, and were questioned in the presence of their parents. See the full session, here    • NYCLDVideo 003B Video Statement of An...   .

Antron McCray describes in fine detail how the pack ambushed, attacked, and raped Trisha Meili. He names as accomplices Central Park Five members Clarence Thomas, Kevin Richardson, Steve Lopez and Raymond Santana.

He references a "tall black kid" who hit the victim in the head with a metal pipe. That was Central Park Five member Yusef Salaam, who has declared his candidacy for the New York City Council. These individuals are now publicly lauded, venerated, revered and memorialized as the so-called "Exonerated Five".
