In this video, I will be casually going about my Saturday welding off my welding truck. Which is one of my favorite things to do. We will be repairing a little sucker rod (also known as cold roll) fence down at the farm. I'll also be sharing what welding rod I use in this situation. It's nice to just enjoy some low-key farm welding from time to time. I hope you enjoy the video.

It's easier to practice good welds on work that doesn't need it than trying to learn good welding skills on work that counts.

#1 rule for welding: always be comfortable. Yes that includes wearing loafers 🤪

Austin, I got a chuckle out out sticking your rod. It happens to al of us. Thanks for real world welding video.

Farm welding is good therapy time. It's just you and your welding machine doing it the way you want to do it. Like I say at times " IT'S ALL GOOD IN THE HOOD".

Personally I always like 6011 on rusty steel, much easier to start on rusty metal and the Flux burns through paint or rust better in my opinion. 7018 is definitely stronger but needs a cleaner surface.

Love the Idea of Welding the "Proper Way vs The Farm Way" LL&P

A lot of us have so much knowledge we need to help young metel fabricators thanks mr.ross

It is so refreshing to watch a guy that really enjoys his work.

A buddy of mine and I built a couple of 40x40 sucker rod horse pens about 25 years ago. We lasered the holes post to post , then slid the rod through. Ran a full bead around the rod. It turned out good. The only draw back, is if cattle hit and bend them, it’s harder to replace.

I love how real your videos are. Stuck rod, good to see it happens to the pros too!
  • That weld that you mentioned underneath the sucker rod is important also when it comes to a real cold front coming thru and the top weld wants to draw up and possibly crack.

In my experiences, when welding iron that has been downhole for any length of time, particularly sucker rod, it is beneficial to preheat. It takes a few moments but the result is far less cracking. From what i have been taught, sucker rod is high in tensile strength but is brittle. Preheat tends to help mitigate this. I try to go 3" on either side of the weld to about 6-800°. It takes just a moment with a rosebud, but has all but eliminated cracks for me even when saddling on production pipe. Just my .02 on what has worked for me.

Acetylene tanks have acetone in them that is soaked in the mat material inside the tank. With it being laid down and being used the liquid acetone can come up the hose, through the tip and blow up. Fron what Ive heard.

I used golf hats for welding for over 30 years. Usually keeps the sparks out of my ears and off of my beautiful hair 😆 I used both bottles laying down but valve end up on a 4 x4 so inclined up. I learned the hard way never let the valve end be inclined down. The oxygen ruptured the regulator and blew the hose like a bomb. I had the bottles on a truck with a 4 x 4 tilting them up but the truck was tilted. And I didn't really notice. Not big on laying them down any more.
  • Is it just me or is Austin losing weight? We need to get him more views!🤣
  • Thanks for sharing with us today Austin. I enjoyed the farm way segment and it looked great too. Stay safe aroud there and keep up the great videos. Fred.

I share your enthusiasm for simple task around the farm or ranch. They provide a solid feeling of accomplishment because the rewards are immediate. Killing me walking on the back of your pants though 🙂

I love the fact they used old well rods from the oil fields I broke miles of that rod as a kid in the natural gas industry
  • @Bone_Frog2666
Austin you’ve been my go to for information on oil field pipe building/fabrication. Currently doing my property perimeter in 2-7/8 Pipe. My experience here in Southern California is the 3/32 6011 works best. Love all your content brother!
