In 2011, James sat down at his home studio, TheBarn in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, with writer/director David Mirkin to give a special tour of his guitar collection which James called "like a photo album of my life." Featured discussion in Part 1 includes James’s “painted blue” first guitar purchased at Schirmer Music in NYC when he was 12 years old and the Gibson J-50 on which he wrote some of his earliest songs including “Fire and Rain” and which he played when auditioning for George Harrison and Paul McCartney in 1968.

  • And then there came the Olsons. And the songs just kept coming! THANKS JT. Just thank you. My generation has been so blessed...

Thank you James. My favourite song of yous' is "Fire and Rain". I'm 58 and been happily married for 32 years. But before then. back in '85, I was engaged to a lovely girl whose parents and "the plans they made put an end to" us. I still think of her often. She is now 56, never married, and her name is Suzanne.

That's your sound! The tone you pull out of that Gibson is unique.
  • @klinej54
And we're all glad you're with us.
  • I am breathless hearing notes played on that venerable Gibson. We are so glad it is still with you and that you are still with us. Happy 2021, James!

James, words cannot express how much I appreciate your music. Your are a great artist and I a just can't say thank you enough. I hope you read this because I do want you to know how thankful I am for your and your music. Your music has touched many others but maybe mine in particular. In the mid seventies, my family moved to Afghanistan and all we had ( I was a young teenager maybe 15 years old) was was a couple of 8 track tapes of you and Carol King. What an impression your music has made on me as I listened to you almost everyday. Many years later, maybe thirty years later, I listened to you and Carol singing on a PBC special as I was in a lonely hotel room in DC. Many tears were shed in joy at hearing you sing. I was never so mesmerized and filled with joy when I watched the special. It was a transcendent experience. Its hard to explain such experience of being carried away to another time and another place. It brought back so many memories. Thank you so much for the gift that you have given to me and to many others. Thank you James.
  • Singing within his natural range, James Taylor has the purest tone of any singer I've ever heard. Imo

That guitar sound and playing style of James is instantly recognizable with only a few chords. Mark knopfer is another guitar player with that rare ability. Very comfortable and soothing sound. Like coming back home after being away a long time.

I still have my Gibson SJ Natural (67). I used it teaching 1,000’s of lessons and playing JT tunes. Glad I still have it after all these years. Thanks, James.
  • @denali9643
Thoroughly enjoy this and can't wait for Part II.
  • @paddymurph
2021 really is better!! A video of JT talking about his guitars really is gold to me.
  • I have. Physical reaction whenever I hear James play........great stress relief and joy all rolled into one. Thank you for sharing all the memories.
  • @brians761
Awesome . You know it’s JT the second you hear the tone of his guitar . Really is a beautiful thing .
  • Oh goodness the sound when he played that guitar- tears happiness
  • @DavidLasoff
To see you with that Gibson, to hear you pick "Something in the way she..." and the story about meeting Paul and George...thank you, James. You know you've heard it a million times but that song stirs something in me about a girl and a long time ago. You and that guitar reached me too and have been ever since that time and that girl. You're a treasure, James.
  • @lastdaysguitar
Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton might be the reason I started playing guitar, but hearing James Taylor was the reason I got into acoustic and learned finger style playing. Thank you for so many years of inspiration, James: Happy New Year, and may you & yours be blessed with every good thing this year!
  • Wow..wow..wow...some serious music history going on in that room. Thank God they're still all alive and happy
