It is an M-38A1, and pre 1955. It has subdued headlight buckets with no blackout lights in the grill. I own a 1955 M-38A1, pre 55 has 4 straps with bolts that hold the battery box cover in the cowl closed, 55 and newer has a single snap latch on the battery box lid. It has the 17 gal fuel tank under the drivers seat as you can see the 4 inch combat fast fill filler neck foe the tank on the drivers side of the tub. It also has the dog bowl in the passenger side of the tub for the 24 volt slave cable socket for jump starting vehicles, it has the 4bolt cover plate in the dog bowl. The only thing I see is the spare tire carrier is missing. My M-38A1 does have the cj 5 grill in it, and I also have a 283 Chevy in mine with a full cage. Great Jeep , sorry to see you have to let it go.

283 is a good engine, drops the value a bit, tho. So does the roll cage.. I have a 67 with the dauntless buick motor. Love it!

Cool, thanx for the reply. I speculated it was a power source, but I wasn't sure, and I actually didn't think of a field radio. That makes a lot of sense, tho.

It’s a M38A1 with a CJ5 grill. The headlamps and park lamps are not military. I have the exact same combination

I own an m38a1, and on mine, it's a 24v power outlet for a field radio. Allows you to use your Jeep as a generator basically.

Amazing how many people who do not know what an M38-A1 is. True, this is not an M38, or an MB, or an MA, but it is indeed an M38-A1. It is a military with a shape similar to the CJ-5. I drove one in high school and college. This is clearly an M38-A1. It has many parts that are different from the CJ-5. Legendspeed is correct on all of the differences. In addition, the steering box and frame are heavier. Granted, this has an upgraded Chevy engine, which is different from the stock M38-A1, but it certainly was not stock for a CJ-5.

VERY NICE! GOOD TO SEE SOME PEOPLE KEEPING THE CLASSICS ALIVE WHAT'S THE PRICE?

What is that plug on the passenger side fender for? I see it may be blanked out here, so the wiring is probably not there, but I thought I'd ask in case you know. Thanks.
