Hiking Guadalupe Peak, Highest point of Texas

Published 2016-06-24
A short video of our hike up Guadalupe peak, the high point of Texas, on June 18th, 2016. My dad and brother and I met at the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and together we hiked Guadalupe Peak. It was a hot day, but we took our time and enjoyed ourselves.

Thank you for this excellent view of this scenic area. I've heard of this hike, but never seen the details you offered. Very impressed with the views.

I hiked up on June 17th, 2017. I planned to camp overnight and hiked up to the high camp but did not bring enough water. I set up my tent and promptly hiked back down, dehydrated and sick. The next day, I licked my wounds and hiked all the way to the top and came back down to camp in the tent I had set up the night prior. It was an eye opening experience and now I always keep a liter reserve in my pack for myself or others. The first part of the trail was the most challenging but I feel like anyone can hike this with a little bit of training. The views from up top were incredible!
  • I will be doing this next month! As always appreciate the documentation...

I've driven past this park a hundred times passing through. You motivated me to hike it this fall.
  • We completed the torturous hike to the top and back down a few days ago. We are in our mid-60’s and the cold, gale force winds nearly did us in but we made it!

I attempted to hike up Guadalupe on New Years Eve with the intention of camping out at the camp spot towards the top. I wanted to do my first winter backpacking trip and put my gear to the test. I was prepared for 25-30 degree weather but things were much different that day. It was expected to be 13 degrees with high winds. I still hiked up there with my backpack but wasn't able to camp out. Next time!
  • I drove right by there in my big rig, now I really get to see the moutain range,

Thanks Zack for posting your hiking vids. I just completed this hike in mid July. I started at 7 am and it was 70 degrees. The early part of the hike puts the hurt as it is steep and i wasn't warmed up yet. The views are amazing. I reached the peak in 2 h 45 m. It must have been 60 degrees and very windy up there. On my way down i met a Mule train heading up with alot of water. Does the campsite near summit provide a reservoir for campers ? When i reached the parking lot past noon it was 88 degrees. I was fortunate to hike in great temps. I want to hike the Bowl next time.

June, July and August are not the ideal months to climb there. I do September thru December. Nice hiking during those months and a great overnight at the high campground too without the Spring winds there.

Very fine video footage. Going to start at Franklins first.
  • any scary points of the hike, i would like to do this but get vertigo with narrow trails with drop offs
