The Hope Valley features a lot in the collection, partly because it’s local to me and the people that film for us and partly because it is such a picturesque route. This video covers two subjects - the new Hope Valley Improvement Scheme and the diversion via Stockport due to major repairs on the Romiley Branch beyond New Mills. It’s lovely day so enjoy the ride.

You are the Spielberg of cab video rides.

Well, I didn't think I would see a 156 described as "heritage" for a few years yet! Thank you for another great video.

As always Don. Thank you for taking the time to film, edit and upload this video.

Great video, thanks Don. The Hope Valley line is so pretty, especially in nice weather. Nice to see that not quite all the semaphores have disappeared. I wonder if colour light signals will attract the same nostalgia when (if) ERTMS ever takes over.....

  • That's a line I've not travelled for many, many years! Thanks for taking me down memory line!!! By the way, there is another line that crosses the Pennines, it's the Tyne Valley line from Newcastle to Carlisle.
  • I will tell you now you can't count me as a make up checker, I admire brilliant engineeing to the extent that Brunel was one of my childhood idols

To be honest, all my journeys between Manchester and Sheffield in the early 90's were all via Stockport.
  • The improvements at Dore & Totley are good, but not great. Wouldn’t it have been much better to reinstate the mainline platforms to trains to/from Chesterfield, Nottingham and Derby etc. can call?
  • @chemistmanuk
A very nice run, clear weather, high def camera and no sun glare. Worth doing the reverse run?

@2:16 I wouldn't want to drive a car over that landslip, let alone a freight train!

Is heritage code for old and knackered? These have always been my least favourite stock but appreciate they are needed. Do you miss driving them Don?
  • @Ashworth-Media
Class 156 is now heritage??? there is still a lot of them around along with the 150' and 158's , can we afford to make new ones???, we are still waiting on 'Great British Rail' to arrive.
