As of today Mickey has been added to the public domain! Along with his first ever released short (Steamboat Willie) the first cartoon ever made featuring him is also public domain! Though only the silent version is public domain and will remain such until 2025 when the sound version becomes public.

The sound version is still copyrighted until 2025.
  • First animal abuse and now sexual assault. How many years in jail would this mouse get?

I'm honestly interested if artists or creators would expand on Steamboat Willie Mickey's horrible traits and make him some sort of memorable villain in some series or games.

Im thinking that more than anything else, Disney corp wanted to hide Mickey's criminal behavior in the early cartoons.
  • Dang you can really see how Walt was just transitioning from Oswald in this one. This really feels like an Oswald short with a Mickey-themed coat of paint.

Lessons Disney taught kids in... 2021: accept those who are different 1928: if she don't wanna, just force her

I'm so glad that we as a society own this now

Man, I really did not expect “getting sprayed with milk from a cow’s teets” (and I guess “animals lactating” in general, including the sow nursing the piglets) to be a recurring theme across these two cartoons.
  • If I had a nickel for every time Mickey got sprayed with a cow's milk in a public domain black-and-white cartoon....I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

Damn, Mickey is a criminal. Like he abused animals in steamboat Willie and in 1:57 and forced Minnie to kiss him in this short. He only got caught in the chain gang and yet he tried to escape.

This is gonna be great for people who want to practice sound design.
  • I was always confused on which short counted as the true first mickey short, plane crazy or steamboat willie. As far as I knew, plane crazy came first. However, in recent years I found out that chronologically, Steamboat willie came first because it came out in public theatres while Plane crazy's silent version was only ever shown in test screenings.
  • I have an idea: why don’t we put public domain music over it? Or just create our own

Bro og Mickey is an actual menace. It was a different time clearly, one I'm glad we're long since past.

I love this style of slapstick humour, and the animation is so smooth and nice looking, I can see why Walt Disney is considered one of the greats

Someone finally remembered this is also in public domain

Wait a minute i thought only steamboat willie got public domain
